System Overview

Tailings basin containment, new cells, embankment interfaces and extensions requires a system selected for the site and its operating conditions. Geomembranes, GCLs, protection geotextiles and drainage components are selected as a complete, project-specific containment system.

The starting point is the approved design and the project information: tailings chemistry, foundation conditions, drainage, interface stability, operating plan and the engineer of record’s liner design. We review the material schedule and specification with the project team before confirming products and quantities.

Supply and delivery are planned around the destination, access and construction programme. Product identity, available documentation, packing and route requirements are confirmed in the proposal; stock and mobilisation commitments are project-specific.

Installation and QA/QC are defined in the agreed scope, with inspection hold points and records established before work starts. Independent CQA or specialist testing is included where specified and appointed for the project.

Components Legend

1

Prepared subgrade

Prepare and accept the formation, levels and bearing conditions to the approved drawings. Surface preparation and any required ground testing are specified for this particular system.

2

Protection geotextile - Mirafi P40

Protection geotextile is selected for the adjacent liner, loading and foundation or cover material. Confirm the specified grade and placement; nominal mass alone is not a complete protection design.

3

Primary Liner - GSE HDPE Textured Geomembrane

Select the exact geomembrane grade and surface finish for the specified containment duty. Thickness, interface performance, joins and protection are set by the approved design, not a universal minimum.

Design Inputs for Tailings Storage Facility Lining

Confirm the design inputs: tailings chemistry, foundation conditions, drainage, interface stability, operating plan and the engineer of record’s liner design. The project designer sets the system arrangement and acceptance criteria.

Geomembranes, GCLs, protection geotextiles and drainage components are selected as a complete, project-specific containment system.

Confirm interfaces, joints, connections and transitions on the drawings. Adjacent products must be compatible with the selected system; proposed substitutions require designer approval.

Use current manufacturer data for the exact grade and the relevant service conditions. Generic thicknesses, tensile ratings or service-life claims do not establish suitability for every project.

Plan access, sequencing, storage, protection and covering around the project programme. Identify the inspection stages that must be completed before work proceeds.

Agree the technical submittals, method statement and QA/QC plan with the project team. Statutory approvals and independent engineering or CQA responsibilities remain as defined in the project appointments.

Tailings Storage Facility Lining Installation & Handover

Before installation, confirm the product and grade, accept the work area and inspect delivered material. Establish storage, handling, layout and protection requirements using the approved method and manufacturer guidance.

For applicable geomembrane seams, the QA/QC plan identifies air-channel testing (ASTM D5820), vacuum-chamber evaluation (ASTM D5641) and destructive peel/shear testing (ASTM D6392) as appropriate to the material and seam. Test settings, sampling and acceptance criteria come from the approved specification; electrical leak testing is a separate, specified method.

Record installation checks, test results where required, repairs and hold-point releases. Protect completed work until acceptance and compile the agreed traceability and handover records.

Tailings Storage Facility Lining QA/QC

Approved Design & QA/QC Plan

Confirm the approved drawings, product schedule, method and inspection hold points. Testing and acceptance criteria are agreed before installation.

Product Identity & Traceability

Check manufacturer, product grade, roll or unit identification and the required documentation against the order and approved submittals. Record damage or discrepancies for resolution.

Work-Area Acceptance

Inspect the prepared work area, levels and interfaces against the specified acceptance criteria before placing the system. Required geotechnical verification is completed by the appointed party.

Installation Inspection

For applicable geomembrane seams, the QA/QC plan identifies air-channel testing (ASTM D5820), vacuum-chamber evaluation (ASTM D5641) and destructive peel/shear testing (ASTM D6392) as appropriate to the material and seam. Test settings, sampling and acceptance criteria come from the approved specification; electrical leak testing is a separate, specified method.

Specified Testing

Apply the test methods and frequencies specified for this system. Specialist or independent testing is provided where required by the project appointment; a method suitable for one material is not automatically suitable for another.

Repairs & Non-Conformance

Record non-conformances, agreed corrective work and reinspection. Keep the product or installation under control until the specified acceptance process is complete.

Protection & Completion Checks

Inspect terminations, connections, protection and relevant drainage or collection details before covering or commissioning. Record any outstanding work for close-out.

Handover Records

Compile the agreed product identification, inspection records, applicable test results, repairs and as-built information for project handover.
