| About Geomembrane Liners

Geomembranes are ultra-low-permeability synthetic membrane barriers - the critical last line of defence between a contained fluid or waste mass and the surrounding environment. Manufactured from virgin polymer resins formulated with carbon black, antioxidants and UV stabilisers, they are engineered to perform across Africa's harshest conditions: extreme UV exposure, aggressive mine chemistry, differential settlement, and temperature swings from sub-zero to 60 °C.

At Geosynthetics Africa, geomembranes are never simply product. They are the foundation of a containment system - and a system is only as reliable as its weakest link. That is why we control liner selection, design, supply, installation, seam testing and QA sign-off as a single engineered scope. No fragment handovers. No procurement gaps. One contract, one crew, one signed QA dossier.

| Types of Geomembrane Liners

HDPE Geomembranes

The continental benchmark for permanent containment. Highest chemical and UV resistance, 50–100 year buried service life. Specified for TSF, heap leach pads, landfill base liners and canals. Available smooth and textured (single/double). GRI-GM13 certified. 0.75 mm – 3.0 mm.

LLDPE Geomembranes

Superior flexibility and elongation (400–700%) for differential settlement, complex geometries and flexible cover applications. Preferred for agricultural dams, reservoirs and poor subgrade conditions. GRI-GM17 certified. 0.75 mm – 2.5 mm.

rLLDPE Geomembranes - Floating Covers

Scrim-reinforced LLDPE engineered specifically for floating cover applications on slurry ponds, TSF water recovery dams, effluent ponds and biogas digesters. Standard liners fail in this application - rLDPE is specified for a reason. Project-sourced; contact us for lead times.

EPDM Geomembranes

Vulcanised synthetic rubber with unmatched UV and ozone resistance - no carbon black required. NSF/ANSI 61 certified for potable water contact. Specified for drinking water reservoirs, exposed long-term pond liners and cold-climate applications. ASTM D4637. 1.0 mm – 1.5 mm.

CSPE Geomembranes

Thermoset liner for applications where HDPE's chemical resistance ceiling is not enough - concentrated acids, alkalis, oxidising reagents and aggressive industrial dosing environments. ASTM D5019. 0.9 mm - 1.4 mm

EVA Geomembranes

Retains flexibility at sub-zero temperatures and bonds directly to cementitious substrates - the specification for concrete reservoir lining and rehabilitation, and cold-region water infrastructure. 1.0 mm – 2.0 mm

PVC Geomembranes

Highly conformable and cost-competitive for short-to-medium service life applications. Irrigation channels, farm dams, tunnel waterproofing and ornamental ponds. Not recommended for long-term exposed or high-chemical environments. 550gsm - 1200gsm

fPP Geomembranes (flexible Polypropylene)

Unreinforced flexible polypropylene combining the chemical resistance of HDPE with the conformability of LLDPE - and significantly better flexibility at low temperatures than either. Highly resistant to stress cracking, UV degradation and a broad chemical spectrum. Specified for landfill containment, water storage and applications requiring both chemical resistance and flexibility without reinforcement. GRI-GM13 / GRI-GM18 certified. 0.75 mm – 2.0

| Benefits of using Geomembrane Liners

Proven impermeability

Geomembranes achieve permeability values as low as 10⁻¹⁴ m/s - several orders of magnitude lower than compacted clay. They provide a reliable, testable barrier that compacted earthworks alone cannot match, and their integrity can be verified seam-by-seam before handover.

Long service life

Properly specified and installed geomembranes last decades - HDPE liners buried in stable conditions carry rated service lives of 100+ years. Exposed EPDM and rPP systems consistently deliver 25–40 years without liner replacement, dramatically reducing lifecycle containment costs.

Chemical and UV resistance

Geomembranes are formulated to resist the specific chemical, thermal and UV conditions of their application - from concentrated mine reagents and leachate to prolonged direct sun exposure. The correct liner type eliminates degradation as a failure mode for the design life of the structure

Cost-effective containment

A geomembrane system typically costs a fraction of an equivalent engineered clay liner - and installs faster, with a smaller environmental footprint and no dependence on suitable on-site clay material. For remote African project sites, this difference is significant.

Verifiable quality

Unlike compacted clay or earthworks, geomembrane seam integrity is directly testable - every weld can be pressure-tested and documented before cover placement. This gives project owners, engineers and regulators an auditable record of containment quality that no other liner system can provide

Adaptable to any project geometry

With liner types ranging from rigid HDPE to highly elastic LLDPE and elastomeric EPDM, geomembranes conform to complex shapes, steep slopes, differential settlement and large unsupported spans - covering containment applications that rigid or earthen systems cannot practically address.

| Frequently Asked Questions about Geomembrane Liners

What is the difference between HDPE and LLDPE geomembranes?
HDPE offers superior chemical resistance and long-term durability - the benchmark for permanent mining and landfill containment. LLDPE offers much higher elongation (400–700%) and conformance to differential settlement - preferred for dams on poor subgrades, complex geometries and flexible cover applications. Many large projects use both.
Do you supply only, or do you also install?
Both - on one contract. Geosynthetics Africa is one of only 5 IAGI Installer Members in Africa. For clients with their own installation crews, we supply materials with full technical documentation and certification.
Are your liners certified to GRI-GM13 and GRI-GM17?
Yes. Third-party test certificates ship with every product. On-site destructive and non-destructive seam testing is conducted on every GSA installation.
Can you supply and deliver across Africa?
Yes. Geosynthetics Africa has delivered to 30+ African countries with customs clearing, bonded logistics and in-country delivery. Upload your BOQ for a full landed-cost quotation.
What is rLDPE and when is it used?
Reinforced LDPE is engineered for floating cover applications — where standard liners fail under the biaxial stress of spanning large liquid surfaces. Geosynthetics Africa has installed rLDPE floating covers on TSF water recovery ponds, effluent dams and biogas digesters across Africa.
What thickness should I specify for a TSF liner?
The African industry standard for TSF base liners is 1.5 mm or 2.0 mm HDPE GRI-GM13, with double-textured liner on slopes greater than 3H:1V. Final specification is driven by site hazard classification, regulatory requirements and CQA plan. Our technical team provides specification guidance at no charge.

| Specifications for Installing Geomembrane Liners

All Geosynthetics Africa geomembrane installations are executed to the following minimum standards. Project-specific CQA plans may impose additional requirements.

Subgrade: smooth, free of protrusions >12 mm, debris and standing water. Signed off by GSA QA supervisor before liner deployment.

Welding: dual-track fusion (wedge) welding for field seams; extrusion welding for repairs, patches and complex geometry. Daily trial welds on calibrated equipment before liner goes down.

Non-destructive testing: 100% of fusion seams air-pressure tested (ASTM D5820); 100% of extrusion welds vacuum-box tested (ASTM D5641).

Destructive testing: peel and shear samples to ASTM D6392 at minimum one per 150 m of seam, tested on-site.

Handover: full QA dossier, weld log, NDT results, destructive test reports, material roll log, panel as-built drawing and signed handover certificate - issued under Geosynthetic Africa's name.
