Overview

GeoDuct HDPE Cable Ducting for South Africa and Africa

GeoDuct is a solid, unslotted double-wall corrugated HDPE conduit for protecting buried fibre-optic, telecommunications and low- to medium-voltage electrical cables. Its ribbed exterior provides structural support with low weight. Straight lengths have a smooth bore for cable pulling; coils have a lightly corrugated bore to permit winding.

Sizes are specified by outside diameter: 50, 75, 110, 160, 200, 250 and 315 mm. Typical internal diameters are respectively 40, 63, 95, 137, 173, 217 and 273 mm. Standard supply is 6 m straight lengths in 75-315 mm and 50 m coils in 50-160 mm; 50 mm is coil-only. Longer coils up to 1,250 m are available on request, subject to diameter and production confirmation.

SANS 61386-24 buried conduit performance: Class N impact classification; compression resistance at 5% internal-diameter deformation is at least 450 N for straight lengths and at least 250 N for coils. These force values are not an SN ring-stiffness class or a traffic-load rating. Cover depth, bedding, backfill and imposed loads require project-specific engineering.

Black is the standard colour. Red is available for telecoms on request; specify colour with the enquiry. Couplings and sealing rings are available throughout the range, with integrated spigot-and-socket joints for 200-315 mm. End plugs, spacers, chamber entries and bends are selected by diameter; larger-size accessories require confirmation.

Applications include FTTH and fibre backbone routes, telecom networks, street lighting, traffic signals, municipal duct banks, mine and industrial cable routes, solar PV and wind farm electrical infrastructure, and housing or commercial estate services. GeoDuct is cable protection conduit; select GeoPipe for slotted subsoil drainage and GeoPipe HD where a specified higher-stiffness structured-wall pipe is required.

Install on level, stone-free bedding to the approved design. Control duct spacing, joint engagement and bends; plug open ends, provide draw ropes, and compact suitable backfill in layers. Coils require a minimum bending radius of 15 times OD. Record product size, condition, joints, bedding, cover and route as part of installation QA/QC.

Geosynthetics Africa supports specification review, material supply, couplings and accessories, delivery and agreed installation and QA/QC scopes. Send a BOQ with diameter, colour, metres, length or coil format, accessories and site location for South African and cross-border African projects.

Typical Applications

View all applications
Fibre Optic & Telecoms Networks

Protect buried fibre backbone, FTTH and telecom cables with unslotted HDPE ducts. Select actual internal bore, bend radius and pull length for the cable design. Black is standard and red telecom ducting is available on request, subject to the network owner’s specification.

Underground Power Distribution

Protect buried LV/MV power cables in approved duct banks. Coordinate duct sizing, spacing, cable thermal design, route identification and chamber access. The utility owner determines colour requirements; loading and cover are design inputs.

Road & Highway Cable Crossings

Use 6 m straight lengths and suitable fittings where road crossing alignment requires control. Check cover, backfill and traffic loads with the designer; SANS 61386-24 compression values alone do not establish approval for any road crossing.

Solar PV Plant Cable Management

Provide buried conduit routes for solar PV and wind farm cables, with design review of thermal effects, depth, spacing and pulling requirements. UV stabilisation for storage and handling does not constitute a permanent above-ground exposure specification.

Municipal & Smart City Infrastructure

Support street lighting, traffic signals, CCTV and municipal telecommunications with diameter-matched unslotted conduit and accessible chambers. Record routes and use the project-specified warning tape and identification system.

Installation Guidance

Standard Method Statement

Set trench depth, width and cover from the approved design, allowing for cable thermal requirements and imposed loads. Prepare level, stone-free bedding with adequate support; do not infer permitted traffic load from the compression test value.

Uncoil progressively without twisting or kinking. Maintain at least 15 × OD bending radius for coils. Use diameter-matched spacers for duct banks and suitable bends where a tighter change of direction is required.

Clean ends and inspect couplings, sockets and seals. Fully engage each joint; fit the specified sealing ring where water or silt exclusion is required. Confirm joint suitability for the project rather than assuming every push-fit joint is watertight.

Keep open ends plugged during construction and provide a draw rope with adequate tails. Clear the bore before cable installation and record route and chamber locations.

Place suitable backfill evenly around ducts and compact in controlled layers. Cover before compaction equipment or construction traffic is permitted must be approved for the installation. Do not use nominally higher pipe stiffness to compensate for inadequate cover without design approval.

Use pulling equipment and lubricant compatible with the cable and duct. Respect the cable supplier’s bend and pulling-tension limits. Inspect bore continuity and retain a draw rope where specified.

Store coils flat and lengths on level supports away from sharp objects and unstable trench edges. UV stabilisation supports handling and storage; avoid prolonged sunlight exposure. Record delivery condition, product identification, bedding, jointing, cover and as-built route for QA/QC.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Field QA/QC Checklist

  • Delivery & Storage: Materials checked against the delivery note and conformance certificates, stored off the ground, covered from UV and kept clear of sharp objects and fuel.
  • Material Conformance: Duct certificates checked for diameter, wall thickness and impact strength against the specification.
  • Trench & Bedding: Trench depth, bedding and cover depth checked against the design and the service owner's requirements.
  • Joints & Draw Wire: Couplers fitted and sealed; draw wire installed; duct ends capped.
  • Proving: Ducts proved with a mandrel or test rod after backfilling; warning tape placed above the duct.
