GEOLINE HD500 – 0.5 mm Smooth HDPE Pond & Dam Liner

GEOLINE HD500 is a smooth 0.5 mm (500 micron) HDPE liner made from virgin resin with carbon black, antioxidants and stabilisers, for farm dams, irrigation reservoirs, aquaculture ponds and other low-risk water containment. In 5.8 m × 100 m and 7 m × 420 m rolls. Not for landfill, mining, tailings or chemical containment: those need 1.5 mm or thicker.

0.5 mm Virgin HDPE, Carbon Black UV
Rolls to 2,940 m² – Fewer Seams, Less Waste
For Farm Dams, Ponds & Aquaculture

Overview

GEOLINE HD500 is a smooth high-density polyethylene liner, 0.5 mm (500 micron) thick, manufactured by Huitex from premium virgin HDPE resin with carbon black for UV protection, plus antioxidants and stabilisers. It is designed for water containment on low-risk sites: farm dams, irrigation reservoirs, aquaculture and fish ponds, stock watering dams, rainwater storage, decorative and garden ponds, and temporary water storage.

Where HD500 fits. At 0.5 mm, this liner suits clean water, a well-prepared subgrade free of stones and roots, gentle side slopes, and sites where the liner is covered or protected rather than left exposed to traffic and machinery. Used within those limits, it is a cost-effective way to stop seepage and make a dam hold water.

Where HD500 does not fit. This is the part we would rather lose a sale over than get wrong. Do not use 0.5 mm liner for landfill or waste containment, tailings storage facilities, heap leach pads, process solutions, effluent or leachate ponds, hydrocarbon or chemical containment, any application with regulatory liner requirements, sites with sharp or rocky subgrade, steep slopes, heavy wave action, or exposed installations under machinery or livestock traffic. These need 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm or thicker liner, usually textured on slopes, and often with a protection geotextile. Ask us and we will quote the correct grade.

Standards, stated honestly. GRI-GM13, the benchmark HDPE geomembrane specification, covers thicknesses from 0.75 mm to 3.0 mm. HD500 is thinner than that range, so it is not a GM13-compliant product and we do not claim it as one. It is manufactured to Huitex's own quality standards, with mill certificates supplied for every roll. Where your specification, consultant or regulator calls for GM13 compliance, choose GEOLINE HD750 (0.75 mm) or heavier from our GRI-GM13 range.

Thickness is an engineering decision. GM13 itself does not determine the correct thickness for a site, the liner system configuration, chemical compatibility or the protection geotextile required. As a rough guide: 0.5 mm for low-risk clean water containment on prepared subgrade; 0.75 to 1.0 mm for light-duty and larger reservoirs; 1.5 mm as the workhorse for mining, landfill and industrial containment; and 2.0 mm and above for high-load or hazardous sites. If your project is near the boundary, go thicker. A liner failure costs far more than the difference in material price.

Supply and installation. HD500 comes in two roll formats so you can match the roll to the job and cut offcut waste: 5.8 m × 100 m covering 580 m² for smaller dams, ponds and sites without lifting equipment, and 7 m × 420 m covering 2,940 m² for large reservoirs, where the wider panel means fewer welded seams across the basin. The large roll weighs roughly 1.4 tonnes, so a crane, excavator or telehandler with a spreader bar is needed to offload and deploy it. The liner is welded on site by hot wedge or extrusion. Our IAGI-aligned crews install and test across Africa, or we can supply liner, welding rod and accessories for your own installer, with delivery to over 30 countries.

HDPE Smooth Geomembranes

The standard profile for flat and gently graded containment surfaces - TSF base liners, landfill cells, reservoirs, canals and process ponds on slopes not exceeding 3H:1V. Virgin resin, GRI-GM13 certified. 1.0 mm – 3.0 mm.

HDPE Textured Geomembranes (Single & Double)

Specified where slope stability and interface friction are design-critical. Single-textured for one-sided friction interfaces; double-textured mandatory on slopes steeper than 3H:1V. GRI-GM13 certified. 1.0 mm – 2.5 mm.

HDPE White / Reflective Geomembranes

Reflective white surface bonded to a black HDPE base - reduces liner temperature in high UV environments where exposed black HDPE can exceed 70 °C. Specified for heap leach pads, exposed caps and long-term surface applications. GRI-GM13 certified. 1.0 mm – 2.5 mm.

HDPE Conductive Geomembranes (ELL-enabled)

Conductive layer enables Electrical Leak Location (ELL) testing through cover soils and under water - pinpointing defects without excavation. Specified for high-consequence TSF, hazardous waste and double-liner systems requiring post-installation leak detection. 1.5 mm – 2.5 mm.

Installation Guidance

Standard Method Statement

Installation follows the approved project method statement, panel layout and QA/QC plan. The receiving surface is inspected before deployment. Panel overlaps, anchorage, temporary restraint and welding conditions are set for the selected liner and equipment, following manufacturer guidance and the project specification.

Dual-track fusion welding and extrusion welding are used as appropriate to the seam and detail. Non-destructive testing uses the applicable method: pressurised air-channel evaluation to ASTM D5820 for dual seams, and vacuum-chamber evaluation to ASTM D5641 where suitable. Destructive peel and shear testing to ASTM D6392 is performed at the frequency and acceptance criteria defined in the approved project QA/QC plan.

Repairs are recorded and retested using the applicable method before acceptance and covering. Handover documentation is defined in the agreed scope and may include material roll records, panel layouts, weld logs, non-destructive and destructive test records, repair logs, as-built drawings and the handover certificate.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Field QA/QC Checklist

  • Subgrade Acceptance: Subgrade signed off before deployment: smooth, compacted, free of stones, roots and protrusions, and no standing water or desiccation cracks.
  • Material Conformance: Roll numbers and manufacturer QC certificates checked against GRI-GM13 (HDPE) or GRI-GM17 (LLDPE); conformance samples taken where the CQA plan requires.
  • Trial Welds: Trial seams made and peel/shear tested at the start of each shift, for each welder and machine, and whenever conditions change.
  • Non-Destructive Seam Testing: 100% of seams tested: air-pressure testing of double-wedge welds (ASTM D5820) and vacuum-box testing of extrusion welds, patches and repairs (ASTM D5641).
  • Destructive Seam Testing: Seam samples cut at intervals set by the CQA plan (GRI-GM14) and tested in shear and peel to ASTM D6392 against GRI-GM19 values.
  • Leak Location Survey: Electrical leak location survey (ASTM D7007 for covered liners, ASTM D7002/D7703 for exposed liners) where specified, before handover.
  • Panel Layout & Repairs Record: As-built panel layout, seam log and repair log kept and signed off, with every repair vacuum-tested.
