Overview

Africa's Reference-Grade Jute Erosion Control Blanket

Jute SoilLock is a biodegradable open-weave erosion control blanket woven from 100% natural jute yarn. The open mesh structure absorbs raindrop impact, slows surface runoff and holds seed and topsoil in place through the germination window, while leaving the surface open to light, water and air so vegetation establishes through the mesh rather than under it. As the fibre breaks down over roughly twelve months it returns organic matter to the soil, by which point the root mat has taken over the stabilising function.

Specification: 100% natural jute fibre, plain open weave, single yarn, 292gsm, 10 × 10 mm mesh aperture. Supplied in 1.22 m × 100 m jumbo rolls (122 m²) and 1.22 m × 50 m rolls (61 m²). Fully biodegradable with no synthetic residue, no netting to trap wildlife and nothing to remove at end of life.

Applications: grass and vegetation establishment, batter and cut-slope protection, mulch retention, swale and open-drain lining, sand dune and coastal stabilisation, mine site rehabilitation, natural regeneration and revegetation areas, landscaping and parks. Not suitable for concentrated high-velocity flow or highly erodible faces without additional armouring.

Handling and supply. Rolls are hand-placeable - 36 kg for the jumbo, 18 kg for the 50 m - so no forklift is needed at the working face and material can be carried into terraces, benches and cut faces that plant cannot reach. Geosynthetics Africa supplies across South Africa and the wider continent, with pan-African logistics putting roll volumes on site from Cape Town to East and West Africa on a single specification and lead time.

Typical Applications

View all applications
Road & Highway Embankments

Jute SoilLock is the standard specification for cut and fill slopes on road and highway construction across Africa. Installed immediately after earthworks to protect exposed soil from rainfall erosion while grass and indigenous vegetation establishes on the slope face.

Mine Rehabilitation & Tailings Dam Reclamation

Jute SoilLock is used on mine waste dump slopes, tailings dam embankments and disturbed land rehabilitation where rapid vegetation establishment is required to meet closure and environmental compliance requirements.

Dam, Canal & River Bank Protection

Jute SoilLock protects freshly graded dam embankments, canal banks and river bank reinstatements from rainfall erosion and low-velocity overland flow during the vegetation establishment period.

Landfill Capping & Slope Stabilisation

Jute SoilLock is specified on landfill cap slopes and slag heap reinstatement where biodegradable surface protection is required during vegetation establishment. Decomposes without leaving synthetic residue in the capping system.

Drainage Channels & Culvert Outlets

Jute SoilLock lines drainage ditches, culvert outlets and blanket drain outlets where low to moderate flow velocities require temporary erosion protection while grass establishes to provide long-term channel lining.

Jute SoilLock 292 Jumbo Roll - 1.22m x 100m

The jumbo roll format supplies 122m2 per roll - the largest standard jute blanket roll available in South Africa. Fewer roll changes per slope, fewer transverse joints, lower packaging waste and reduced transport cost per square metre compared to the shorter cut lengths supplied by competitors. Supplied at full 292gsm specification. Ideal for large infrastructure slopes, road embankments, highway cuttings, mine rehabilitation and any project where installation productivity and cost per square metre matter.

Jute SoilLock 292 Standard Roll - 1.22m x 50m

The standard roll format supplies 61m2 per roll at the same 292gsm full-strength specification as the jumbo roll. Suited to smaller projects, confined access sites, patch repairs and applications where the full 100m jumbo roll is impractical to handle. Both formats are interchangeable on site and carry the same technical specification.

Installation Guidance

Standard Method Statement

Surface Preparation - Level the area and remove rocks, roots and obstructions to allow maximum soil contact with the blanket. Do not leave large voids between the blanket and the soil surface.

Anchor Trench - Excavate an anchor trench approximately 150mm deep at the top of the slope. Place the leading edge of the roll into the trench and backfill and compact. This prevents the blanket from peeling back from the crest under wind or water flow.

Rolling Out - Unroll Jute SoilLock from the top of the slope downward. Lay loosely to closely match topsoil contours - do not stretch the blanket between anchor points. The blanket must maintain full contact with the soil surface.

Overlaps and Joins - Overlap adjacent lengths by a minimum of 150mm in the direction of water flow, or sew together with sisal twine. On transverse joins running across the slope, the upslope length must overlap the downslope length. Avoid any gaps between adjacent lengths.

Pegging - Peg down at 1m grid intervals both down and across the slope using wooden pegs of 500mm or longer, notched to snag the fabric. On steeper slopes reduce peg spacing to 500mm intervals.

Seeding - Seeding can take place before or after laying. If seeding after installation, spread seed through the open mesh directly onto the soil below. Saplings and shrubs can be planted through the mesh after installation is complete.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Field QA/QC Checklist

  • Delivery & Storage: Materials checked against the delivery note and conformance certificates, stored off the ground, covered from UV and kept clear of sharp objects and fuel.
  • Material Conformance: Product category checked against the design (e.g. ECTC classification); tensile strength (ASTM D6818) and performance data (ASTM D6459 slopes / ASTM D6460 channels).
  • Seedbed Preparation: Slope graded smooth, topsoiled and seeded before installing the blanket; clods and stones removed.
  • Anchor Trench & Stapling: Top anchor trench, overlaps (upslope over downslope) and staple pattern to the manufacturer's guide.
  • Contact & Inspection: Blanket in full contact with the soil; inspected after rainfall and repaired where undermined.

Manufacturing Standards

  • ASTM D6818 tensile properties
  • ASTM D6459 slope erosion performance
  • ASTM D6460 channel erosion performance
  • Erosion Control Technology Council (ECTC) specifications
