Overview
The PolyTape 30 Silt Fence is a woven slit-film polypropylene geotextile silt fence purpose-engineered for sediment and erosion control on construction sites, road projects, mine rehabilitation areas, land development perimeters and environmentally sensitive zones across Africa. Fabricated from WG30HF woven PP geotextile - manufactured under ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certified quality systems and CE marked - the PolyTape 30 Silt Fence delivers a level of performance that most purpose-branded silt fence products cannot match.
The 300µm characteristic opening size (O90, EN ISO 12956) is specifically engineered to trap fine silts, clays and sediment particles carried in stormwater runoff - the particle size range responsible for the majority of erosion-related environmental non-compliance on African construction projects. Critically, the woven slit-film structure simultaneously passes water at 39 mm/sec, eliminating the hydrostatic head build-up behind the fence that causes non-woven silt fences to bow, pull free from posts and fail during high-intensity rainfall events common across tropical and summer-rainfall regions of Africa.
At 30kN/m biaxial tensile strength (EN ISO 10319), the fabric withstands post-and-stake installation tension, wind loading and the lateral pressure of accumulated sediment over extended site durations without tearing or deformation. UV stabilisation ensures 90% retained strength after prolonged outdoor exposure - essential for long-duration construction and mine rehabilitation projects in high-UV tropical and semi-arid African environments where non-UV-stabilised silt fencing degrades within a single wet season.
At 145 g/m² the fabric accepts mechanical stapling, tie-wire and clip fixing to timber or steel posts without fraying or edge failure. Available in three standard widths - 500mm, 600mm and 700mm all in 100m rolls, allowing specifiers and site teams to match fence height to slope gradient, runoff velocity and site-specific sediment storage requirements.
Width selection guide: 500mm suits flat to gently sloping terrain and low-flow perimeter control. 600mm is the most widely specified width on African road and construction projects, suiting moderate slopes and standard post heights. 700mm provides maximum above-ground effective height for steep slopes, high-velocity runoff channels and applications requiring the greatest sediment storage capacity between maintenance intervals.
Geosynthetics Africa stocks all three widths and supplies contractors, environmental consultants, engineers and project owners across 30+ African countries. We provide specification support, logistics to site and QA/QC-controlled installation for erosion and sediment control works on projects of all sizes. Typical Applications
View all applicationsRoad & Highway Construction
The primary silt fence specification for road and highway construction projects across Africa - controlling sediment discharge from cut slopes, fill embankments, drainage diversions and disturbed road corridors during construction. PolyTape PP Silt Fence 600 mm and 700 mm widths are the standard specification for highway projects where stormwater management plans and environmental compliance programmes require a published, tested and certified sediment barrier. 30 kN/m tensile strength and selvedged edges maintain fence integrity through the full construction programme duration.
Construction Site Sediment Control
Specified for perimeter sediment control on residential, commercial and industrial construction sites - preventing sediment-laden stormwater discharge from active earthworks to adjacent properties, stormwater systems and watercourses. PolyTape PP Silt Fence 500 mm and 600 mm widths cover the full range of construction site applications from individual residential lots to large commercial developments. Compliant with environmental impact assessment requirements and municipal stormwater management bylaws across African jurisdictions.
Mining & Rehabilitation
Specified for sediment control on active mining sites, tailings facility perimeters, heap leach pad construction, haul road corridors and post-mining rehabilitation areas. PolyTape PP Silt Fence 700 mm width is the standard specification for mining applications where sediment loads, flow volumes and environmental compliance requirements are at their most stringent. UV-stabilised for sustained performance through multi-year mining construction and rehabilitation programmes - 90% retained strength after weathering (EN 12224).
Erosion Control & Land Rehabilitation
Specified for slope erosion control, gully head protection, disturbed land rehabilitation and revegetation programmes where sediment must be retained on-site during vegetation establishment. PolyTape PP Silt Fence installed on contour across slopes reduces runoff velocity, traps sediment and creates micro-catchments that accelerate vegetation establishment. O90 300 µm opening size retains fine soil particles while passing rainfall infiltration - maintaining soil moisture for seedling establishment behind the fence line.
Construction & Infrastructure
PolyTape PP Silt Fence is the specified woven PP sediment control solution for construction and infrastructure projects across Africa - roads, highways, bridges, commercial developments, residential estates and urban infrastructure. Published tensile strength, opening size and flow rate data satisfies stormwater management plan and environmental compliance requirements on all project scales. Supplied across 30+ African countries with pan-African logistics and technical support.
Compatible Systems
View all systemsPolyTape PP Silt Fence 500mm
The standard specification for light to medium sediment load applications - residential construction sites, small land development projects, garden and landscaping earthworks and low-gradient slope protection. 500 mm height suits standard single-timber-post installations where flow volumes and sediment loads are moderate. Selvedged edges, 30 kN/m tensile strength, O90 300 µm - woven PP performance in the most common silt fence width on African construction sites.
PolyTape PP Silt Fence 600mm
The primary specification for medium to high sediment load applications - road and highway construction, commercial site development, pipeline corridors and mining rehabilitation. 600 mm height provides increased freeboard above ground level for higher flow volumes and steeper gradient sites. The most widely specified width for civil infrastructure and environmental compliance programmes where stormwater management plans require a published, tested silt fence specification.
PolyTape PP Silt Fence 700mm
The heavy-duty specification for high sediment load, high flow volume and steep gradient applications - active mining sites, large-scale earthworks, highway construction in high-rainfall zones and erosion-critical rehabilitation sites. 700 mm height maximises sediment retention capacity and overtopping resistance under peak rainfall events. Specified where environmental compliance requirements are most stringent and sediment discharge to watercourses, wetlands or sensitive receiving environments must be eliminated.
Installation Guidance
Standard Method Statement
Post Installation - Drive timber or steel picket posts to minimum 400 mm depth - 600 mm on loose, sandy or disturbed soils. Space posts 1.5–2.0 m for timber, 2.0–2.5 m for steel picket on flat to moderate gradients. Reduce to 1.0–1.5 m spacing on steep gradients and high flow volume sites. Posts must be vertical and aligned to the design fence line before fabric attachment.
Trench & Fabric Placement - Excavate a 150 mm deep × 150 mm wide anchor trench along the upslope face of the post line. Unroll PolyTape PP Silt Fence along the post line and lay the bottom 150 mm of fabric into the anchor trench. Attach fabric to posts with staples or ties at maximum 150 mm spacing from top to bottom - selvedged edges must be secured at every fixing point. Never leave raw fabric edges exposed at post fixings.
Anchor Trench Backfill - Backfill the anchor trench with compacted soil immediately after fabric placement - do not leave the trench open. Compact firmly to prevent underflow bypass beneath the fence. Underflow bypass is the most common installation failure on African construction sites and renders the fence ineffective regardless of fabric performance.
Joining & Maintenance - Overlap adjacent rolls by minimum 300 mm at a post position - never mid-span. Secure overlaps at 100 mm staple spacing top to bottom. Inspect monthly and after every significant rainfall event. Remove accumulated sediment when it reaches 50% of fence height - do not allow sediment to overtop. Replace damaged sections immediately. At site completion, remove posts, roll and dispose of fabric responsibly - 100% polypropylene construction is fully recyclable.
