Overview

Square Weldmesh Gabion Baskets - the Architectural Specification

Square welded mesh gabions are manufactured from mild tensile steel wire welded at every intersection to form a rigid square grid panel. That rigidity is the whole point of the product: where hexagonal woven mesh flexes and is the correct specification for river training, hydraulic works and anywhere differential settlement or dynamic loading is expected, weldmesh holds a precise geometric form. For feature walls, boundary walls and architectural structures, that precision is what you're buying.

Weldmesh or hexagonal - how to decide. Specify hexagonal woven mesh where the structure must tolerate movement: river banks, watercourses, slopes subject to settlement, and civil retaining structures under dynamic load. The double-twist weave carries structural redundancy, so a broken wire doesn't unravel the panel. Specify square weldmesh where the structure is static and the face matters: freestanding walls, boundary walls, cladding, pillars, planters and sound barriers. Weldmesh fills faster, bulges less under infill pressure, and holds a square, flat face. It does not accommodate foundation irregularity as readily, so level the foundation across the full wall length before the first course.

Aperture selection. 50x50mm is the tightest and suits smaller, cheaper rock without it working loose at the face — the choice for domestic and architectural work. 75x75mm and 50x100mm suit larger infill and read as a bolder grid at distance, better on long boundary runs and larger feature walls where a fine grid disappears.

Three supply formats. Assembled baskets arrive flat-packed and fold up on site - the standard for freestanding walls and retaining structures, with no tensioning frame required. Flat panels are cut and folded on site for pillars, lettering, furniture, bar counters and cladding over existing structures. Mesh rolls cut to length for long boundary runs and sound barriers where panel joints would otherwise dictate the wall rhythm.

Infill defines the wall. The same basket reads completely differently depending on what goes in it - golden sandstone, white quartz, black basalt, river pebble, slate, recycled glass, timber rounds, even building rubble on budget jobs. On exposed faces, place face stones by hand and machine-fill the interior behind them. We can advise on rock supply and selection.

Architectural Feature Walls & Commercial Landscaping

Square weldmesh gabion feature walls are specified on commercial, hospitality, retail, and residential estate developments across South Africa where a contemporary natural stone wall aesthetic is required without the cost and rigidity of conventional masonry. The clean square grid integrates with modern architectural finishes and the unlimited infill options — from local quarry stone to decorative sandstone, slate, and black basalt — allow each installation to be visually unique. Geosynthetics Africa supplies the basket system and can advise on decorative rock supply and infill selection for architectural gabion wall projects.

Boundary Walls & Security Perimeters

Square weldmesh gabion boundary walls provide a robust, low-maintenance perimeter treatment for residential estates, commercial properties, industrial sites, and agricultural holdings. The rock-filled gabion mass provides inherent structural stability without engineered foundations, the permeable structure eliminates hydrostatic pressure in areas of seasonal waterlogging, and the natural stone aesthetic requires no painting, rendering, or surface maintenance over the life of the structure. Sound attenuation performance makes gabion boundary walls effective noise barriers on properties adjacent to busy roads or industrial operations.

Sound Barriers & Noise Attenuation Walls

Gabion sound barriers in 75x75mm square weldmesh or 80x100mm hexagonal woven mesh, filled with 100-250mm unweathered rock at minimum density 2.60 t/m3, absorb traffic and industrial noise rather than reflecting it — providing measurably better acoustic attenuation than solid concrete or brick walls of equivalent height. Gabion sound barriers are specified on road, highway, and industrial site perimeters across southern Africa where conventional noise barrier walls are cost-prohibitive or aesthetically unacceptable. The natural stone finish ages with the landscape and requires no maintenance or repainting.

Gabion Pillars, Lettering & Feature Structures

Square weldmesh flat panels fabricated into custom profile gabion pillars, entrance features, gabion lettering, signage bases, gabion furniture, and branded commercial installations. The rigid weldmesh panel holds precise geometric forms that the flexible hexagonal woven mesh cannot deliver — enabling sharp corners, clean vertical faces, and structurally precise pillar profiles. Gabion pillars in 75x75mm weldmesh reinforced with square tubing provide robust, low-maintenance entrance and boundary pillar structures for residential estates and commercial developments. Geosynthetics Africa provides design assistance and fabrication support for custom weldmesh gabion feature projects.

Garden Gabions, Terracing & Raised Garden Beds

Square weldmesh garden gabions in 50x50mm aperture provide homeowners and landscapers with a flexible, DIY-friendly retaining and feature system for garden terracing, raised garden beds, internal feature walls, and decorative garden elements. The Gab-Bloc mini gabion in 300x300mm cross-section is the most practical option for garden-scale applications — reducing rock volume, simplifying handling, and providing a finished gabion wall aesthetic without the logistics of standard basket delivery and filling. Fill with local rock, decorative pebbles, glass bottles, timber logs, or roof tiles.

Freestanding Square Weldmesh Gabion Baskets - Architectural & Feature Walls

Fully assembled square weldmesh gabion baskets in 50x50mm, 50x100mm, or 75x75mm aperture for freestanding architectural feature walls, boundary retaining walls, terrace walls, and commercial landscaping structures. Wire welded at every intersection for a rigid, precise square grid face. Clean geometric aesthetic integrates easily with contemporary architectural finishes. Filled with rock, decorative stone, glass bottles, timber logs, or building rubble on site. Class A Galvanised mild tensile steel. Custom basket dimensions available on request. Supplied flat-packed for erection and filling on site.

Square Weldmesh Flat Panels & Rolls - Custom Site-Fabricated Applications

Square weldmesh supplied in flat panel or roll format for custom site-fabricated gabion dimensions, wall cladding over existing structures, gabion pillar construction, curved wall sections, and large-area coverage applications where standard basket sizes do not suit the design geometry. Available in 50x50mm, 50x100mm, and 75x75mm aperture with 3.00mm or 3.15mm wire diameter Class A Galvanised. Panels and rolls can be cut, folded, and connected on site using binding wire or structural clips to suit any design requirement.

Gab-Bloc Mini Gabion - 300x300mm Cross-Section - Small Retaining & Feature Walls

The Gab-Bloc is a mini gabion basket with a 300x300mm cross-section - available in 1x0.3x0.3m and 2x0.3x0.3m sizes with a diaphragm compartment spacer at 1m intervals. Available in square weldmesh or hexagonal woven mesh finish. Designed for small retaining walls up to 1.5m height, garden terrace walls, feature walls, and raised garden beds where a standard basket is oversized and over-specified. The small cross-section reduces rock volume required significantly versus standard baskets - a cost advantage where rock is scarce or expensive near site.

Gabion Sound Barriers - Square Weldmesh or Hexagonal Woven Mesh

Gabion sound barriers using square weldmesh in 75x75mm aperture with 3.15mm wire, or hexagonal woven mesh in 80x100mm aperture with 2.70mm wire. Filled with 100-250mm unweathered rock at minimum density of 2.60 t/m3. The rock-filled gabion mass absorbs noise rather than reflecting it - significantly more effective at noise attenuation than solid concrete or brick walls of equivalent height. Binding wire 2.20mm supplied for both mesh types. An additional 0.5mm PVC coating is available for the hexagonal woven mesh variant in corrosive environments.

Installation Guidance

Standard Method Statement

Square weldmesh gabion installation requires no specialist plant or equipment. Fully assembled basket installation follows the same sequence as hexagonal woven mesh gabion baskets - erect, connect adjacent panels with binding wire, fill, and close lids. For flat panel and roll-format weldmesh, panels are cut to size, folded to the required box or cladding profile on site, and connected using binding wire or structural clips. The rigid weldmesh panel holds its shape during erection and filling without the tensioning frame required for flexible hexagonal woven mesh.

1. Foundation and Geotextile - For retaining wall applications, excavate and compact the foundation to the specified level. Place a non-woven geotextile separation layer between the gabion structure and the retained soil before basket placement. For freestanding decorative walls with no retained soil, a geotextile is not required. Ensure the foundation is level across the full wall length before placing the first basket course - weldmesh panels are rigid and do not accommodate foundation irregularity as readily as flexible woven mesh.

2. Basket Erection and Connection - Unfold flat-packed basket panels and fold up the sides and ends to form the box. Connect all vertical edges of adjacent baskets using 2.2mm binding wire at maximum 150mm centres alternating single and double loops. The rigid weldmesh panel holds its erect shape without a tensioning frame - no pegging or tensioning is required before filling. Connect adjacent basket lids together across the full wall width after filling each course.

3. Infill Placement - Fill baskets in layers, placing face stones by hand to achieve the desired face aesthetic. Machine infill of the basket interior is acceptable once the face layer is established. For decorative infill - glass bottles, decorative stone, or mixed materials - place infill entirely by hand to control the visual arrangement on the exposed face. Do not overfill - the infill surface must be level with or slightly below the basket top to allow the lid to close and connect flat.

4. Lid Connection and Subsequent Courses - Connect the basket lid to all four sides using 2.2mm binding wire at maximum 150mm centres. Connect adjacent basket lids to each other across the wall. Place the next basket course directly on the connected lids and repeat. For gabion pillar construction using flat panels, build each panel layer and connect with binding wire at all corners and intermediate panel edges before infilling. For sound barrier construction, ensure the rock infill density is maximised - use 100-250mm unweathered rock at minimum 2.60 t/m3 density for maximum noise attenuation performance.
