TechPave C040
Needle-punched nonwoven polypropylene paving fabric functioning as a stress-absorbing membrane interlayer (SAMI). Prevents reflective cracking in asphalt overlays. 140 g/m², CRRI approved.
Overview
TechPave C040 is a needle-punched nonwoven paving fabric manufactured from high-quality polypropylene staple fibres, engineered to function as a stress-absorbing membrane interlayer (SAMI) in bituminous overlay construction. The fibres are mechanically bonded to form a strong, flexible and dimensionally stable structure, heat-treated on one face to control bitumen pickup during laying.
How it works. When saturated with a bitumen tack coat, the fabric retains approximately 1.0 kg/m² of binder and cures into a continuous flexible membrane sandwiched between the existing pavement and the new asphalt overlay. This membrane performs three functions at once. It absorbs and dissipates the horizontal shear and thermal movement that drive cracks upward from the distressed layer below, delaying reflective cracking through the new wearing course. It forms a waterproof barrier that stops surface water reaching the base and subgrade, protecting against stripping, pumping and moisture-induced failure. And it maintains separation between layers, preventing intermixing that degrades pavement stability.
Where it is used. TechPave C040 is specified for asphalt overlays on distressed flexible pavements, highway and expressway resurfacing, urban road rehabilitation, airport taxiway and apron overlays, road widening joints, and bridge deck waterproofing systems. It is most cost-effective on pavements exhibiting fatigue and thermal cracking where the underlying structure remains sound.
Installation. Supplied in 5.0 m wide rolls of 100 m length - 500 m² per roll - allowing full-lane-width laying with fewer longitudinal overlaps and faster placement than narrow-format fabrics. The fabric is placed onto the sprayed tack coat with the heat-set face down, and the asphalt overlay is laid directly over it.

Typical Applications
View all applicationsRoad Rehabilitation
Laid under a new overlay on a road that has cracked but whose base remains sound. The saturated fabric waterproofs the pavement and relieves the stresses driving cracks upward - the most economical way to extend the life of a structurally adequate road.
Asphalt Overlays
Full-width application beneath premix or thin overlays. At 5 m wide the fabric covers a lane in a single pass with minimal overlapping, which keeps laying rates high and reduces the number of joints in the finished interlayer.
Surface Seals and Reseals
Used beneath chip and cape seals as well as under asphalt. The fabric waterproofs a surface that would otherwise let water into a rutting or shrinkage-cracked base, allowing a reseal to serve as a holding action where funds don't allow full structural rehabilitation.
Crack Sealing and Patch Repair
Cut into strips or patches and applied over cracked or failed areas as a pre-treatment before full resealing. Installed by hand with brooms and squeegees, needing no specialised plant, which makes it well suited to routine maintenance contracts and SMME work.
Airport and Industrial Pavements
Runways, taxiways, aprons and heavy hardstandings where water ingress into the layerworks is costly to repair and closures are disruptive. The waterproofing function protects the base between resurfacing cycles.

Installation Guidance
Standard Method Statement
Surface preparation - Remove water, grass, weeds, grease and any other material that would prevent bonding, and sweep the surface clean of all loose material. Blowing cracks out with compressed air is ideal. Prefill cracks wider than 7 mm with a hot sealant, and repair potholes, failed patches and depressions beforehand - allow cold emulsion-based repairs about a week to cure; hot mix patching needs no waiting period. The fabric mitigates cracking but does not substitute for repairing structural failure.
Tack coat - Spray a uniform bitumen emulsion or warm-applied binder using a calibrated distributor, set to cover 100 mm wider than the fabric. The fabric absorbs 1.0 ℓ/m² by itself, so the rate must exceed that to saturate the fabric and bond it to both layers - increase it further on cracked, weathered or open-textured surfaces, which draw more binder than a tight surface. Under-application is the most common cause of failure: an unsaturated fabric neither waterproofs nor bonds. Avoid cutback bitumen entirely, as the solvents become trapped in the fabric and cause bleeding and slippage later.
Placement - Roll out the fabric onto the tack coat, preferably with a mechanical laydown device to reduce wrinkles, before the binder loses its tackiness. Where emulsion is used under an asphalt overlay, allow it to break first. Work out creases with a squeegee or the reverse of a hard broom; cut stubborn folds open, apply extra binder to one side and overlap. Overlaps and joins should be 100–150 mm. Spraying binder 150 mm beyond the edge of the first width means the overlap is saturated when the next width is laid over it.
Rolling - Roll with a pneumatic tyred roller, three to four passes, once the tack coat has set sufficiently to avoid pick-up. Delay rolling if pick-up still occurs, and keep the tyres clean and free of binder. Rolling seats the fabric into the tack coat and removes remaining wrinkles. Where the overlay is delayed or traffic must cross the fabric, blind the surface with washed coarse river sand or 4 mm stone to prevent pick-up, keep speeds low, and avoid sharp turning or heavy braking.
Overlay and constraints - Place the asphalt overlay according to normal design procedure. Feed mix beneath the paver rather than allowing it to push the fabric, and repair any displacement or damage before continuing. Note the binder constraint throughout: the fabric melts at 150°C, so emulsion or warm-applied binders are required - hot penetration-grade bitumen, SBR-modified hot bitumen and bitumen rubber are all applied above that temperature and are unsuitable. Not recommended at intersections or sharp bends where braking and turning forces are high, or where vertical movement across a crack is severe enough to tear the fabric.
Quality Assurance & Testing
Field QA/QC Checklist
- Delivery & Storage: Materials checked against the delivery note and conformance certificates, stored off the ground, covered from UV and kept clear of sharp objects and fuel.
- Surface Preparation: Existing surface cleaned, cracks sealed and potholes repaired; surface dry before laying.
- Tack Coat: Bitumen tack coat applied at the rate set for the product (ASTM D6140 asphalt retention for paving fabrics) and evenly spread.
- Placement: Interlayer laid without wrinkles; overlaps and transverse joints to the manufacturer's guide; folds cut and lapped.
- Overlay: Asphalt overlay placed at the specified minimum thickness and temperature; no sharp turning of plant on the interlayer.
