Geogrids & Interlayers
Triaxial Geogrid – Tensar® TriAx® (TX)
Tensar® TriAx® (TX) triaxial geogrid: a hexagonal structure with triangular apertures that confines aggregate for stronger, stiffer road foundations, working platforms and rail trackbed. Aggregate savings of up to 50%, with over 500 million m² installed globally. Supplied across Africa by Geosynthetics Africa, an official Tensar Associate.
Overview
Tensar® TriAx® (TX) geogrid was the first product manufactured specifically for the stabilisation of aggregates. Its triaxial geometry is designed to optimise interlock and confinement, both essential for controlling particle movement, producing a stronger, stiffer aggregate layer with increased load spreading capacity and resistance to deformation. More than 500 million square metres have been installed worldwide, backed by over 2 million ESALs of performance validation testing.
The hexagonal structure with triangular apertures gives near-uniform 360° in-plane stiffness. Traffic loads act radially on a stabilised layer, so a geogrid that is equally stiff in every direction distributes that load efficiently. Loads are absorbed at very low strain in the geogrid, which means less deformation in the layer above.
Confinement is what actually does the work. Effective confinement needs a high degree of interlock between aggregate and geogrid, strong junctions, and high in-plane stiffness, and TriAx combines a 3D rib profile, high junction strength and stiff in-plane geometry to deliver all three. The mechanically stabilised layer that results spreads load more widely, improves bearing capacity and reduces the stress reaching the subgrade, so there is less subgrade deformation and less rutting.
For a road or pavement, that translates into two choices: build the same pavement and get a longer life, or build a thinner pavement for the same design life. Incorporating a triaxial geogrid can deliver aggregate savings of up to 50%, which cuts material cost, haulage, construction time and emissions. On African projects where good aggregate is hauled long distances, that saving is usually the decisive number.
Applications are road foundations and subgrade stabilisation, flexible pavement layers, working platforms for piling rigs and cranes, unsurfaced and haul roads, rail trackbed, hardstands, laydown areas and airport pavements. Tensar's own case studies span highways, rail, airports, wind farms, industrial pavements and housing developments.
The range is supplied in grades TX150, TX160 and TX190L. Because design parameters specific to TriAx were developed from extensive research, full-scale testing and field trials, and are built into Tensar's design software, grade selection should come from a Tensar design rather than from comparing datasheet numbers. Ask us to run your project through Tensar+ and we will return a designed solution with the aggregate saving quantified.
Geosynthetics Africa is an official Tensar Associate for Africa: genuine Tensar product with full traceability, access to Tensar design support, delivery to over 30 countries, and installation by our own crews where required.

Typical Applications
View all applicationsRoad Foundation Stabilisation
TriAx geogrids create a mechanically stabilised layer in road foundations, increasing load distribution, reducing subgrade stress and allowing aggregate layer thickness to be reduced by up to 50%. Used on paved roads, unpaved haul roads and access roads across African infrastructure and mining projects.
Rail Trackbed Improvement
Tensar TriAx is specified for rail trackbed stabilisation where geogrid confinement of ballast and sub-ballast reduces track deformation and maintenance frequency. TX170 and TX190L are the primary grades for rail applications. Used on mainline, industrial and mine rail projects.
Working Platforms
TriAx geogrids stabilise temporary and permanent working platforms for construction plant and crane operations over weak subgrades. A single layer of TriAx can significantly reduce platform depth and construction time. Used on building sites, wind farm construction, port expansions and industrial projects.
Subgrade Stabilisation
Where weak or variable subgrades would otherwise require deep excavation and replacement, a TriAx mechanically stabilised layer allows construction to proceed with reduced excavation depth and imported fill. Applicable to residential, commercial and infrastructure projects across African soil conditions.
Unsurfaced Haul Roads
Tensar TriAx extends the service life of unpaved haul roads, mine access roads and construction roads by increasing the stiffness and rut resistance of the running surface aggregate. Reduces maintenance frequency and aggregate top-up requirements on long-term mining and infrastructure sites.

Installation Guidance
Standard Method Statement
TriAx installation is straightforward - unroll, align, tension and cover. The key requirement is a minimum 150 mm aggregate cover before any plant travels over the geogrid.
Prepare and proof-roll the subgrade to the specified formation level
Unroll TriAx geogrid with the correct side facing up - confirm orientation per design drawings
Pull taut by hand to remove wrinkles and lay flat - no mechanical tensioning required
Adjacent rolls are butt-jointed - no overlap required for stabilisation applications
Place aggregate immediately - do not leave geogrid exposed for more than 30 days
Maintain minimum 150 mm aggregate cover before trafficking with construction plant
Compact in accordance with contract specification
Quality Assurance & Testing
Field QA/QC Checklist
- Delivery & Storage: Rolls identified to ISO 10320, stored flat and protected from UV until installation.
- Material Conformance: Certificates checked against the specified properties: tensile strength (ISO 10319 / ASTM D6637), junction efficiency and aperture size.
- Subgrade Preparation: Subgrade graded and proof-rolled; soft spots treated as directed by the engineer.
- Placement & Overlaps: Geogrid laid flat and tensioned by hand, overlaps to the design (typically increasing on soft subgrades), and pinned where needed.
- Fill Placement: Aggregate end-tipped and spread ahead of equipment; no tracked plant directly on the geogrid; minimum fill thickness before trafficking.
