Technical Specification of GeoDrain Dimpled Drainage Boards & Geocomposites

GeoDrain dimpled drainage boards and geocomposites provide a defined drainage and protection layer behind below-ground structures and beneath landscaped roof systems. The profiled HDPE core creates a continuous void through which collected water can be conveyed to the designed drainage outlet, while protecting the waterproofing system from direct contact with soil, backfill and construction loads. GeoDrain systems are used for basement walls, retaining structures, foundations, underground parking, podium decks, planter boxes and green roofs.

The GeoDrain range is deliberately focused around the performance classes commonly encountered on South African civil and building specifications. DS 8-600 and GEO 8-250 provide 8 mm profiles with 250 kN/m² compressive resistance for standard protection and drainage applications; GEO 10-400 provides a 10 mm, 400 kN/m² high-performance geocomposite for more demanding structural drainage; and GR 20/200 provides a 20 mm, 200 kN/m² perforated drainage and water-storage layer for vegetated roof systems. This focused range allows engineers and contractors to select by required function, compressive class and drainage configuration rather than by brand name alone.

For high-volume basement, foundation and retaining-wall work, GeoDrain offers two 8 mm / 250 kN/m² configurations. DS 8-600 is a bare HDPE dimpled protection sheet for applications where a durable separation, protection or drainage cavity is required without an integral filter layer. GEO 8-250 combines the dimpled HDPE core with a factory-bonded polypropylene filter geotextile, allowing water to enter the drainage void while restricting migration of surrounding soil fines. The choice between DS and GEO should therefore be based on the required filtration function, not compressive strength alone.

GeoDrain GEO 10-400 is the flagship civil drainage geocomposite for higher-load and higher-capacity applications. Its 10 mm HDPE drainage core provides 400 kN/m² compressive strength and is factory-bonded to a polypropylene filtration geotextile. The current technical specification reports an in-plane water-flow capacity of 4.11 × 10⁻³ m²/s at 20 kPa and hydraulic gradient i = 1.0. GEO 10-400 is suited to deep basements, retaining structures, underground parking, podium construction, tunnels and other civil works where both drainage and filtration must remain functional under significant imposed loading.

For green roofs and landscaped podiums, GeoDrain GR 20/200 is a perforated 20 mm HDPE drainage and water-storage board designed to manage both temporary water retention and excess rainfall. Reservoirs within the profiled sheet store approximately 6.0 L/m² of water for the planted build-up, while excess water drains through the perforations toward the roof drainage system. GR 20/200 provides 200 kN/m² compressive strength and a published drainage capacity of 10.6 L/s·m. A suitable filter geotextile is installed above the board before placement of the growing medium where required by the system design.

GeoDrain is supplied with technical support for specification, product selection and approved-alternative submissions. Engineers, quantity surveyors, waterproofing contractors and main contractors can submit an existing drainage-board specification, BOQ or competitor datasheet to Geosynthetics Africa for a line-by-line technical compliance review covering dimple height, compressive resistance, drainage performance, filtration configuration, material and roll dimensions. Products are stocked in South Africa for project supply, with technical documentation available for consultant approval and distribution support across sub-Saharan Africa.

Three Questions To Ask Before You Order

1.What is the difference between GeoDrain DS 8-600, GEO 8-250 and GEO 10-400?
DS 8-600 is a bare 8 mm HDPE dimpled sheet rated at 250 kN/m² for waterproofing protection and drainage-cavity applications. GEO 8-250 adds a factory-bonded PP filter geotextile to an 8 mm / 250 kN/m² drainage core for combined drainage and filtration. GEO 10-400 increases the profile to 10 mm and compressive resistance to 400 kN/m² for more demanding basements, retaining structures, podiums, underground parking and civil works. Product selection should be based on filtration requirements, design loading and required drainage performance.
2.Which GeoDrain product should I specify for basement and retaining wall drainage?
For standard basement and retaining-wall drainage requiring filtration, specify GeoDrain GEO 8-250, with an 8 mm drainage core, 250 kN/m² compressive resistance and bonded PP filter geotextile. Where higher structural loading or drainage performance is required, GEO 10-400 provides a 10 mm profile and 400 kN/m² compressive strength. For waterproofing protection where an integral filter layer is not required, DS 8-600 provides the 8 mm / 250 kN/m² bare-sheet option.
3.Can GeoDrain be proposed as an alternative to a drainage board already specified on my project?
Yes, subject to project and consultant approval. Send Geosynthetics Africa the existing product datasheet, BOQ or project specification and we can prepare a technical compliance comparison covering dimple height, compressive strength, drainage performance, filtration configuration, material and roll dimensions. This allows the engineer or consultant to assess the proposed GeoDrain grade against the specified performance requirements rather than relying on product name alone.
4.Which GeoDrain product is used for green roofs and planter drainage?
GeoDrain GR 20/200 is designed for extensive green roofs, roof gardens, planter boxes and landscaped podiums. It is a perforated 20 mm HDPE drainage and water-storage board rated at 200 kN/m², with 6.0 L/m² water-storage capacity and 10.6 L/s·m drainage capacity. A suitable filter geotextile is installed above the drainage board where required by the green-roof build-up

Specification For The Design, Installation Of GeoDrain Dimpled Drainage Boards & Geocomposites

Substrate Preparation & Product Selection – Confirm the specified GeoDrain grade, compressive strength and filtration requirement before installation. Waterproofing membranes and concrete substrates must be sound, clean and free of sharp projections or debris that could damage the drainage core. Complete and inspect waterproofing before covering it. For horizontal applications, confirm designed falls, drainage outlets and discharge paths before laying the drainage board.

Vertical Installation & Overlaps – Install DS 8-600, GEO 8-250 or GEO 10-400 in the orientation shown on the approved project detail, with geocomposite filter geotextile facing the soil or backfill side. Secure sheets using fixings compatible with the substrate and waterproofing system, keeping penetrations above the waterproofed zone wherever practicable. Form continuous overlaps between adjacent sheets and ensure geotextile overlaps prevent soil fines entering the drainage core. Do not leave open joints, displaced fleece or exposed drainage edges.

Drainage Outlet & Backfilling – The drainage layer must terminate into a designed collection and discharge system such as a perforated subsoil drain, drainage channel or approved outlet. Maintain an uninterrupted drainage path at the base of walls and around penetrations. Backfill carefully to prevent displacement, puncture or crushing of the sheet, avoiding direct impact from large aggregate or compaction equipment. GEO 10-400 provides 400 kN/m² compressive resistance where higher imposed loads require a heavy-duty drainage geocomposite

Green Roof & Podium Installation – Install GR 20/200 horizontally over the completed waterproofing/protection build-up with the reservoir and perforation arrangement positioned in accordance with the approved green-roof detail. Maintain free drainage to roof outlets and perimeter channels and install a suitable filter geotextile above the board before placing growing medium where required. GR 20/200 provides a 20 mm profile, 200 kN/m² compressive strength, 6.0 L/m² water storage and 10.6 L/s·m drainage capacity
