| About Waterproofing & Concrete Protection

Concrete only performs as well as the protection around it. Moisture rising from the ground, water pressure against basement walls, erosion in open channels, chemical attack in sewers and poor curing in the first days after a pour all shorten the life of a structure. This category brings together the products that prevent each of these problems, so contractors, engineers and developers can source everything for a concrete job from one supplier.

For damp proofing and waterproofing in buildings, we supply SABS-marked construction plastics to SANS 952. Our 250 micron black underlay and green under-surface membrane are laid under floor slabs, 375 and 500 micron orange tank membrane protects basements and retaining walls, and polyethylene damp proof course (DPC) stops rising damp in brick and block walls. Across Africa these are known as DPM, construction plastic, builders plastic, 1000 gauge polythene or DPM nylon, and we stock every common grade, including jumbo rolls for large slabs.

TILTEX is a needle-punched composite of a cement-sand mixture between polypropylene nonwoven geotextiles. The manufacturer lists cement-mixture weights of 7, 9, 10 and 12 kg/m². TILTEX Plus incorporates an additional polyethylene geomembrane for waterproofing. For concrete protection in civil works, TILTEX GCCM concrete mats line canals, ditches and slopes without formwork or batching plants. CPL concrete protection liners shield sewers, manholes and tanks from corrosion, and CureLock jute hessian keeps fresh concrete wet while it cures, so it reaches full strength without shrinkage cracks. Together they cover every stage of a concrete structure, from the slab on the ground to the lined channel.

Every product is supplied from stock with delivery to more than 30 countries across Africa, backed by mill certificates and compliance documentation. Our certified crews can also install GCCM, CPL liners and curing systems on site, with full QA/QC records handed over at completion. Send your BOQ or drawings, and our team will match the right product and grade to your specification.

| Frequently Asked Questions about Waterproofing & Concrete Protection

What is a damp proof membrane (DPM), and which thickness do I need?
A damp proof membrane, also called construction plastic, builders plastic, black plastic sheeting or 1000 gauge polythene, is a polyethylene sheet laid under concrete floor slabs and foundations. It stops ground moisture rising into the building, and it stops the ground drawing water out of the fresh concrete so the slab cures properly. SANS 10021 sets 250 micron (1000 gauge) SANS 952 sheeting as the minimum under-slab DPM on dry sites, which makes it the standard choice for houses and general building work. 500 micron (2000 gauge) is used for heavy-duty industrial and mining floors and for semi-basements with low water pressure. We stock SABS-marked black and green DPM in widths from 1 m to 6 m, on 30 m rolls and 100 m jumbo rolls. Lay it on at least 50 mm of well-tamped sand blinding, lap the joints by 100–150 mm and seal them, and turn the sheet up at the walls. Matching DPC can also be supplied with your order.
What is orange tank membrane, and where is it used?
Orange tank membrane, commonly known as Hyperplastic Orange, is a heavy-duty SANS 952 Type A polyethylene sheet used for tanking: the waterproofing of basements, retaining walls, lift pits and any structure built below ground level or against a slope. We supply it in 375 micron (1500 gauge) and 500 micron (2000 gauge), in 3 m and 4 m widths on 30 m rolls. The orange colour makes it easy to tell apart from black DPM on site. Under SANS 10021, the membrane is not designed to resist water pressure on its own. It must be sandwiched between structural walls and protected from damage during backfilling. Joints must be lapped and sealed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
What is a GCCM concrete mat, and how does TILTEX compare with conventional concrete?
A geosynthetic cementitious composite mat (GCCM) is a flexible, cement-filled geotextile that is delivered in rolls, laid dry and then wetted with fresh or salt water. It sets into a hard, durable concrete layer. TILTEX replaces cast-in-place concrete, shotcrete and precast panels for lining canals, ditches, culverts and slopes. It needs no formwork, no batching plant and no heavy equipment, and it can be cut on site with a knife to fit around inlets and bends. TILTEX comes in grades from 7 mm to 12 mm thick, reaches compressive strengths of up to 80 MPa and is CE-marked to EN 13253–13257. A standard truck carries about 2,400 m², which keeps transport costs low for remote projects. Our crews can supply and install it anywhere in Africa.
What is a concrete protection liner (CPL), and how is it installed?
A concrete protection liner is an HDPE sheet with anchor knobs on one side. It is cast into new concrete to protect it from chemical attack, corrosion and abrasion. Our AKS anchor knob liners have 1,230 anchors per m². When the concrete is poured against the sheet, the anchors lock permanently into it, so the liner cannot peel or delaminate the way coatings can. CPL is used in sewers, manholes, pump stations, wastewater tanks and mining containment where aggressive chemicals are present. It is available in thicknesses from 1.5 mm to 5.0 mm and in widths of 2.0 m to 3.2 m, supplied in rolls or flat sheets and tested to ASTM methods. The sheets are fixed to the formwork before the pour, and the joints are then welded with HDPE extrusion rod to form a continuous, watertight lining. We supply the liner, rod and profiles, and our certified crews can carry out the welding and testing.
How does concrete curing hessian work, and how long should concrete be cured?
Concrete curing hessian, also called burlap, jute sacking or gunny cloth, is a woven jute fabric that is soaked and laid over fresh concrete or wrapped around columns. It keeps the surface continuously wet while the cement hydrates, so the concrete reaches its full design strength without shrinkage cracks or a weak, dusty surface. Wet hessian also cools the concrete in hot, dry and windy conditions. Our CureLock hessian is woven to IS 2818 in 213 g/m² for columns and small slabs, and 270 g/m² for large slabs and pavements, in 1015 mm wide rolls. Place it as soon as the concrete can take it without marking, and keep it wet for at least 7 days for slabs and structural concrete (longer if your specification requires it), never letting it dry out in between. We can supply the hessian only, or install and maintain it with a daily curing log and a signed record pack at handover.

| Specifications for Installing Waterproofing & Concrete Protection

DPM: Lay on a compacted sub-base blinded with at least 50 mm of well-tamped sand, free of sharp stones. Use the widest rolls practical, lap joints by 100–150 mm and seal them, turn the sheet up at the walls, and patch any tears before the concrete is poured

Tank Membrane: Apply to the outer face of basement and retaining walls, sandwiched between structural elements so it is fully supported against water pressure. Lap and seal all joints to the manufacturer's instructions, and protect the membrane from damage during backfilling.

GCCM: Lay the dry rolls on a smooth, compacted and trimmed subgrade, overlap and fix the joints to the TILTEX installation guide, and anchor the edges in trenches. Hydrate with fresh or salt water until fully saturated. The mat sets within hours and needs no formwork or batching plant.

CPL: Fix the anchor knob sheets to the formwork with the anchors facing the concrete, then pour and vibrate so the anchors embed fully. After the formwork is stripped, weld all joints with HDPE extrusion rod and spark-test every seam for a continuous, watertight lining.

Curing Hessian: Place pre-soaked hessian as soon as the concrete can take it without marking, with 150 mm overlaps and all edges covered. Keep it continuously wet for at least 7 days, or longer if the project specification requires, and never let it dry out in between.

QA/QC: Every installation is recorded with material certificates, daily inspection logs, test results and photographs, handed over as a signed record pack at completion.
