Eurobent® GCL Installation Quality Assurance

Geosynthetics Africa installs Eurobent® Geosynthetic Clay Liners - manufactured by Eurobent Sp. z o.o., Poland, one of Europe's leading dedicated GCL producers - in strict accordance with the Eurobent GCL Drop IN Installation Quality Assurance Manual. GCL installation is fundamentally different from geomembrane installation. There are no welds to test. Quality assurance depends entirely on correct subgrade preparation, precise panel placement, accurate overlap management, bentonite seam treatment, controlled cover placement, and proper hydration sequencing. Get any one of these wrong and the barrier system fails - silently, without visible defect. Our GCL QA process exists to eliminate every one of those failure modes. Stage by stage. Roll by roll. Panel by panel.

Overview

Geosynthetics Africa installs Eurobent® Geosynthetic Clay Liners in strict accordance with the Eurobent GCL Drop IN Installation Manual - from certified subgrade preparation and controlled panel deployment through to bentonite overlap management, hydration protocol, and complete project documentation. Every roll traced. Every overlap verified. Every installation covered before end of working day.

Material Receiving & Roll Verification

Every Eurobent® GCL roll arrives with a unique traceable roll number, lot identification, and Eurobent Internal Test Report (ITR). Upon delivery, each roll is visually inspected for transit damage, packaging integrity is verified, and roll numbers are cross-referenced against the ITR and delivery documentation. Any roll showing moisture ingress in the packaging is removed, examined, and assessed before deployment. Plastic sleeves are not removed until installation begins.

Storage & Handling - Protecting Bentonite Integrity

Eurobent® GCL rolls are stored on pallets — never directly on the ground — and stacked no more than 4 rolls high. All rolls remain in their UV-resistant plastic sleeves during storage and are covered with tarpaulin. Rolls are handled using spreader bar assemblies, stingers fully inserted to prevent bending, or rated fabric straps. No chains, wire ropes, or equipment that could damage the geotextile or compress the bentonite is permitted.

Subgrade Preparation & Formal Acceptance

The subgrade for Eurobent® GCL must be smooth, firm, free of abrupt elevation changes, voids, standing water, sharp rocks, organic matter, and objects larger than 50mm. Compaction must achieve a minimum of 90% Proctor density, with equipment tracks or ruts not exceeding 25mm depth. Engineer approval of subgrade condition is obtained and formally documented before any GCL panel is deployed. No GCL is placed on an uninspected or unapproved subgrade.

Panel Deployment & Overlap Control

Eurobent® GCL panels are deployed with longitudinal joints parallel to the slope direction. End seams are located a minimum of 1m from the toe and crest of slopes steeper than 4H:1V. Panels are unrolled from the bottom - not pulled from the top - to control placement. Overlap markings pre-printed on both edges of every Eurobent® panel are used by the CQA supervisor to verify minimum overlap is achieved on every seam.

Damage Repair - Bentonite Patch Protocol

Minor GCL defects benefit from the self-sealing and self-healing properties of the sodium bentonite. Significant damage is marked immediately and repaired by cutting an Eurobent® GCL patch with a minimum 300mm overlap on all edges. Bentonite powder is applied to the repaired area before the patch is placed. Adhesive is used where site conditions require patch stabilisation before cover placement. All repairs are documented and signed off before covering.

Cover Placement, Hydration & Project Closeout

Cover material is placed on the GCL immediately after installation — panels are never left uncovered overnight or exposed to rain without confining stress. Minimum 300mm cover thickness between equipment and GCL at all times; 600mm in high-traffic areas. Cover soil is always moved upslope to minimise tensile stress on the GCL. Hydration under confining stress is required for full barrier performance - the GCL is never pre-hydrated before covering. Project closes with complete roll traceability documentation and installation records.

QA Framework

Why GCL Installation Quality Assurance Is Different From Geomembrane QA

Geomembrane QA is visible. Every seam is welded and can be air pressure tested. Every defect can be identified, marked, repaired, and retested. The quality of a geomembrane installation is measurable — seam by seam, metre by metre — before a single shovel of cover goes on. GCL quality assurance is different. There are no welds. There is no air pressure test. Once the GCL is covered, there is no non-destructive method to verify the integrity of what is underneath. Quality assurance for GCL installation is entirely preventive - it must be built into every stage of handling, deployment, overlap management, and cover placement before the opportunity to inspect is gone. This is why Geosynthetics Africa treats Eurobent® GCL installation with the same rigour we apply to HDPE geomembrane installation - with a stage-by-stage process, independent QA supervision, and complete documentation - even though there are no welds to test. The absence of a testable seam makes the installation process itself the only quality assurance tool available. We take that seriously.

The Eurobent® GCL Installation QA Process - Applied on Every Site

01

Material Delivery & ITR Verification

Every Eurobent® GCL roll delivered to site is cross-referenced against the Eurobent Internal Test Report (ITR) - the manufacturer's quality control record confirming the roll meets specification. Roll numbers, lot numbers, product type, and dimensions are verified. Only rolls listed on the ITR are accepted on site. Any roll showing moisture ingress in the packaging is removed from the installation queue, water is removed, and the roll is examined before a deployment decision is made.

02

Roll Labelling & Traceability

Every Eurobent® roll is labelled in accordance with EN ISO 10320 with manufacturer name, product identification, and roll number. Labels are inspected on delivery and their integrity and readability preserved throughout storage and deployment. Roll-to-panel traceability is maintained in the installation record - every deployed panel is logged with its roll number, deployment date, and location on the panel layout drawing.

03

Storage & Handling Controls

Rolls are stored on pallets or timber bearers - never directly on ground - stacked no more than 4 rolls high. UV-resistant plastic sleeves remain in place until installation. Rolls are covered with tarpaulin and protected from direct weathering. Handling uses spreader bar assemblies with core pipe support, fully-inserted stingers, or rated fabric straps. No chains, wire ropes, or equipment that could compress, bend, or damage the bentonite layer is permitted.

04

Subgrade Inspection & Engineer Acceptance

Before any GCL is deployed, the subgrade is inspected against Eurobent's subgrade preparation requirements: smooth surface free of abrupt changes, voids, cracks, ice, or standing water; free of sharp rocks, organic matter, and objects larger than 50mm; compacted to a minimum 90% Proctor density; equipment tracks and ruts not exceeding 25mm depth. Engineer approval is obtained and formally documented. No GCL panel is deployed on an uninspected or unapproved subgrade.

05

Panel Orientation & Deployment Control

GCL orientation is confirmed with the project engineer before deployment — the position of differing geotextile types (woven carrier layer vs nonwoven cover layer) affects installation direction. Rolls are transported to the deployment area in original packaging. Panels are unrolled from the bottom — not pulled from the top flap — to maintain control. Rolls are not allowed to unroll freely down slopes. Equipment movement on deployed GCL is restricted to lightweight ATVs with maximum 21.5 kPa (5 psi) contact pressure, with no sudden starts, stops, or abrupt turns.

06

Seam Placement & Overlap Verification

Longitudinal joints are placed parallel to the slope direction. End seams are located a minimum of 1m from the toe and crest of slopes steeper than 4H:1V. Overlap markings pre-printed on both edges of every Eurobent® panel are used by the CQA supervisor to verify minimum overlap is achieved on every seam. The construction match-line delineating the overlap zone is checked on every panel join. A 20kg bag of bentonite powder - supplied by Eurobent with every roll - is used for overlap treatment at seam areas.

07

Anchor Trench & Penetration Details

GCL termination in anchor trenches and around pipe penetrations follows Eurobent's specified procedures. At pipe penetrations, a 150-200mm deep, 300mm wide area is cleared, packed to half depth with bentonite powder or EUROPASTE, and the GCL is cut in star shape to fit around the pipe. A second GCL sheet cut in star shape is placed on top, filled with bentonite powder, and fixed with a pipe shell. At concrete structures, attachment ends above groundwater level with trench packing using bentonite powder or EUROPASTE.

08

Damage Identification & Repair

Despite controlled installation, minor damage may occur. The self-sealing and self-healing properties of sodium bentonite mean that minor defects will seal under confining stress. Significant damage is marked immediately and repaired using an Eurobent® GCL patch cut to provide a minimum 300mm overlap on all edges. Bentonite powder is applied to the damaged area before the patch is placed. Where site conditions require it, adhesive is applied to prevent patch displacement during cover placement. All repairs are documented.

09

Cover Placement - Critical for GCL Performance

Cover material is placed on the GCL immediately after installation — panels are never left exposed overnight or uncovered during rain without confining stress. Premature hydration without confining stress can displace swollen bentonite and permanently compromise barrier performance. Minimum 300mm cover thickness between any equipment tyre or track and the GCL surface at all times. In high-traffic areas or roadways, minimum 600mm cover is required. Cover soil is always moved upslope - never downslope - to minimise tensile stress on the GCL.

10

Hydration Protocol

Eurobent® GCL reaches full barrier performance only after hydration under confining stress. Hydration typically occurs naturally through rainfall and soil moisture absorption under the cover layer - this is the preferred method. Manual pre-hydration before covering is not recommended, as swollen bentonite can be displaced under equipment loads before it is confined. Where manual hydration is required for non-aqueous liquid containment, water is introduced by flooding or irrigation after minimum 300mm cover is in place. Premature hydration events are assessed case-by-case by the CQA engineer.

11

Installation Records & Project Closeout

Every Eurobent® GCL installation closes with a complete installation record - panel layout drawings with roll-to-panel traceability, ITR cross-reference log, subgrade acceptance records, deployment log with panel numbers and roll numbers, overlap verification records, repair documentation, and cover placement confirmation. The Eurobent® 25-year material warranty requires that installation is documented and that workmanship warranty conditions are met. Geosynthetics Africa's installation record provides the evidence base for both

The GCL Rule That Cannot Be Broken: Cover It Before End of Day

The single most critical rule in GCL installation is also the simplest: every panel deployed must be covered with a minimum of 300mm of soil, geomembrane, or approved cover layer before the end of the working day. Eurobent® GCL left uncovered and exposed to rain without confining stress can hydrate prematurely. Swollen bentonite without confinement can be displaced, compressed unevenly, or damaged by subsequent construction equipment - compromising the barrier permanently and invisibly. Geosynthetics Africa enforces this requirement without exception on every GCL installation. Deployment is planned daily to match available cover placement capacity. No panel is deployed that cannot be covered the same day. This is not a preference. It is the foundation of GCL quality assurance.
