Sand Container Installation

Geosynthetics Africa supplies and installs geosynthetic sand containers (GSCs) for coastal revetments, groynes, dune-toe protection, scour defence and riverbank stabilisation across Africa. Containers are filled on site with local sand and placed as permeable, high-mass armour that dissipates wave energy rather than reflecting it, which makes them an engineered alternative to rock armour where quarried rock is unavailable or uneconomic to haul.

Every installation starts with the fabric decision. FlowTex GSC NW needle-punched nonwoven containers, in seven grades from 40 kg to 4,000 kg, are specified where puncture resistance, conformability and fine-sand retention govern. FlowTex GSC W woven containers, in four grades from 30 to 105 kN/m, are specified where the container carries tensile load between units and rapid pore-pressure dissipation through the tidal cycle governs. Both ranges are cut, stitched and seam-tested in our own Johannesburg facility, so non-standard sizes and fabric weights are a production run rather than an import lead time.

Our own crews carry out the full installation sequence: site preparation and setting-out, nonwoven underliner placement, toe embedment to design depth, filling to approximately 80% of theoretical capacity, double-seam closure, stretcher-bond placement with course-by-course compaction, and crest and backfill completion. Each course is photographed and signed off under IAGI-aligned QA/QC before the next is placed, giving engineers and municipal clients a verifiable installation record for tender compliance.
