Silt Curtain Deployment

Floating silt curtains and turbidity barriers deployed, anchored and maintained by our own crews on dredging, bridge, port, mining and shoreline projects. Type 1, 2 and 3 configurations matched to current, tidal range and debris load, with fabricated-to-size barriers from our own factory and deployment across more than 30 African countries.

Service Overview

A silt curtain, also called a turbidity barrier, turbidity curtain or silt screen, is a floating barrier with a buoyant top, a hanging skirt and a weighted bottom, deployed around work in water to stop suspended sediment spreading. Dredging, piling, bridge works, shoreline construction and river diversions all lift fine silt and clay into the water column. The curtain confines that plume to the work zone so it settles there instead of drifting onto reefs, intakes, fisheries and protected habitat, and so your project stays inside the turbidity limits set by its environmental authorisation.

Two things decide whether a curtain works, and both are site measurements rather than product choices. The first is depth: the barrier must reach from the surface to the bed along the whole alignment, and a skirt that is too short simply lets the plume pass underneath, which is the most common cause of failure where water depth varies. The second is anchoring, which has to be sized for the current, depth, bed material and wind fetch of the specific site. We set both from survey rather than assumption, and match the curtain type to the water conditions: a Type 1 curtain in a tidal or high-flow site fails under load, and a Type 3 in still water is money spent for nothing.

We fabricate silt curtains to size in Africa and deploy them with our own crews. Barrier length, skirt depth, fabric weight, flotation, ballast and connectors are configured to the site rather than ordered as a stock size, and local manufacturing means days rather than a container wait when a programme moves or a curtain has to be extended. Our crews handle deployment, anchoring, inspection, repositioning around the works, repair and end-of-project retrieval, with records for your compliance file, on dredging and port projects, bridge and causeway construction, mining and river diversions, hydropower, pipeline and cable crossings, aquaculture and remediation across more than 30 African countries.

Why Choose Geosynthetics Africa?

Fabricated to Your Site

Skirt depth, barrier length, fabric weight and ballast are configured to your survey and tidal range, not ordered as a stock size.

Anchoring Designed, Not Improvised

Anchor type, holding capacity and spacing are worked out from current, depth, bed material and wind fetch before the curtain goes in the water.

Our Own Crews, Not Subcontractors

Deployment, daily inspection, repositioning around the works, repair and retrieval are done by teams we train and answer for.

What We Deliver — At Speed

Type 1 Silt Curtains

For calm water with little current, tidal exchange or debris: ponds, canals, marinas and sheltered work zones.

Type 2 Silt Curtains

For mild current and wind. High-strength fabric, heavy-duty tension members and aluminium stress plates at the skirt corners.

Type 3 Silt Curtains

For dredging and marine construction in moderate current, wind and wave. Reinforced tension members above and below the flotation, with heavier fabric.

Custom Skirt Depths

Skirt depth set from bathymetric survey and tidal range, varied along the alignment where the bed profile changes.

Anchoring & Mooring Systems

Anchors, blocks, stakes and anchor kits sized and spaced for your current, depth, bed material and wind fetch.

Pan-African Coverage & Stock Hubs

Curtains fabricated in South Africa and dispatched by road into SADC or by sea and air to West, East and North African projects, with crews travelling to site for deployment and retrieval.

  • Southern Africa: road-ready dispatch from Cape Town to South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique
  • West Africa: sea and air freight to Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal and Guinea, with French-language documentation
  • East Africa: delivery to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique ports for dredging, causeway and pipeline works
  • Central Africa: DRC and Zambia mining corridors, plus lake and river works on the Congo and Zambezi systems
