TWO GRADES, ONE SUPPLIER · 350gsm civil · 450gsm mining
450GSM MINING GRADE · For TSFs, steep slopes & high rainfall
46% STRONGER ACROSS THE SLOPE · 450 grade: 2.01 vs 1.38 kN/m CMD (ASTM D4595)
100% COCONUT FIBRE · Untreated · breaks down into organic matter
2–3 YEAR PROTECTION · ECTC Type 4B long-term blanket

Overview

Coir SoilLock is a long-term coconut fibre (coir) erosion control blanket made from 100% untreated coconut husk fibre held between photodegradable polypropylene netting on both faces. It protects bare soil from raindrop impact and surface runoff, and it holds seed and topsoil in place until vegetation establishes. It is used on road embankments, mine rehabilitation areas, tailings storage facilities (TSFs), riverbanks, stormwater channels and landfill caps across South Africa and Africa.

One blanket, two grades - specify for the slope, not for the catalogue Most sites don't carry the same erosion risk from crest to toe, or from one project to the next. That's why Coir SoilLock is supplied in two grades under one specification. Engineers and contractors can match fibre mass to the actual rainfall, slope and runoff conditions, and don't have to force one blanket onto every site.

Coir SoilLock is held in stock and delivered to projects in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West, KwaZulu-Natal, the Northern Cape and the Western Cape. It is also exported to Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, the DRC, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal. Our IAGI-aligned installation crews can supply and install under one contract. Upload your BOQ or drawings for a grade recommendation and quote.

Typical Applications

View all applications
Road & Highway Embankments

Coir SoilLock 350 is specified on cut and fill slopes on road and highway construction where slope gradient, rainfall intensity or slow vegetation establishment requires longer protection than jute can provide. The 2 to 3 year service life covers the full establishment period on most African road projects.

Mine Rehabilitation & Tailings Dam Embankments

Coir SoilLock 450 is the mining grade specification for tailings dam embankments, waste dump faces and mine rehabilitation slopes where high-intensity rainfall, steep gradients and slow-establishing vegetation demand maximum erosion resistance. The only 450gsm coir blanket locally stocked in South Africa.

Dam, Canal & River Bank Protection

Both Coir SoilLock grades protect freshly graded dam embankments, canal banks and river bank reinstatements. The 450gsm grade is specified on river banks subject to periodic inundation and higher flow velocities where standard grade coir is insufficient.

Landfill Capping & Environmental Rehabilitation

Coir SoilLock biodegrades completely leaving zero synthetic residue in the capping system - a requirement on landfill caps and contaminated land rehabilitation where permanent synthetic materials cannot be introduced into the closure system.

Drainage Channels & Culvert Outlets

Coir SoilLock 450 lines drainage ditches, culvert outlets and channel banks where moderate to high flow velocities require stronger erosion protection than jute or standard grade coir can provide during vegetation establishment.

Coir SoilLock 350 - Standard Civil Grade

350-360 g/m2 coconut fibre erosion blanket with photodegradable PP netting on both faces. MD tensile strength 3.14 kN/m to ASTM D4595 - higher than competing 330-350gsm products in the African market. For slope stabilisation, embankment protection, stream bank reinstatement and revegetation on civil, infrastructure and environmental projects. Supplied in rolls up to 2.4m x 50m giving 120m2 per roll. Service life 2 to 3 years.

Coir SoilLock 450 - Mining Grade

450-460 g/m2 heavy grade coconut fibre erosion blanket - the only 450gsm coir blanket locally stocked in Africa. MD tensile strength 3.25 kN/m · CMD 2.01 kN/m to ASTM D4595. Thickness 6-7mm. Designed for the high rainfall intensity, steep gradients and aggressive flow velocities found on African mining operations - tailings dam embankments, waste dump faces, haul road cut slopes and mining infrastructure where standard grade coir is insufficient. Supplied in rolls up to 2.0m x 50m. Service life 2 to 3 years.

Installation Guidance

Standard Method Statement

Coir SoilLock 350 Installation - Seed slope before or after installation - hydroseeding before laying is recommended on large areas. Excavate 150mm anchor trenches at crest and toe. Unroll from top downward, laying loosely to follow ground contours. Overlap adjacent lengths by 150mm minimum. Peg at 500mm to 1m intervals with 500mm pegs. Backfill and compact both anchor trenches. Plants can be inserted through mesh after installation.

Coir SoilLock 450 Installation - Same method as 350 with these differences: the 450 is heavier and mechanical assistance is recommended on steep slopes for unrolling. Reduce peg spacing to 500mm on steep mining embankments. Ensure anchor trench at crest is a minimum 150mm deep and firmly compacted - the heavier blanket creates greater pull on the anchor under storm flow. On tailings dam embankments install from the crest downward in one continuous length where possible to minimise transverse joints on the slope face.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Field QA/QC Checklist

  • Delivery & Storage: Materials checked against the delivery note and conformance certificates, stored off the ground, covered from UV and kept clear of sharp objects and fuel.
  • Material Conformance: Product category checked against the design (e.g. ECTC classification); tensile strength (ASTM D6818) and performance data (ASTM D6459 slopes / ASTM D6460 channels).
  • Seedbed Preparation: Slope graded smooth, topsoiled and seeded before installing the blanket; clods and stones removed.
  • Anchor Trench & Stapling: Top anchor trench, overlaps (upslope over downslope) and staple pattern to the manufacturer's guide.
  • Contact & Inspection: Blanket in full contact with the soil; inspected after rainfall and repaired where undermined.
