Geosynthetic Sand Containers
FlowTex™ GSC NW - Nonwoven Geosynthetic Sand Containers
Sand containers fabricated from needle-punched nonwoven geotextile, 200 to 1,200 g/m², in seven sizes from 40 kg to 4,000 kg fill weight. Double lock stitched with Tenara® UV-stable ePTFE thread. For dune revetments, scour protection, temporary works and emergency flood defence, filled with local sand on site.
Overview
FlowTex™ GSC NW are sand-filled containers fabricated from needle-punched continuous filament polypropylene nonwoven, used as soft hydraulic armour where rock or concrete is unavailable, uneconomic or environmentally inappropriate. Filled with locally won sand on site, each unit becomes a stable, deformable mass that conforms to the bed or slope beneath it and absorbs wave energy rather than reflecting it. The nonwoven range is the conforming, abrasion-resistant option in the FlowTex system; the woven range carries higher tensile and burst strength per unit mass where wave loading governs.
Seven standard sizes run from 40 kg units for hand placement and revetment detail through to 4,000 kg units for breakwater cores and major scour protection, with 400 kg, 1,350 kg and 1,800 kg sizes covering typical dune revetment and groyne construction. Fabric weight rises with unit size - 200, 300, 800 and 1,200 g/m² - matching strength to fill mass and handling loads. Grab tensile strength runs from 1,190 N to 6,070 N, burst strength from 2,070 kPa to 8,040 kPa, and UV strength retention from over 70 % to over 80 % at 500 hours.
Seams are double lock stitched with Tenara® UV-stable ePTFE thread, developing over 70 % of parent fabric strength. Because the thread does not degrade under UV exposure, the seam ceases to be the limiting element in exposed service - which is how sand container systems most commonly fail.
The advantage over rock armour is logistical. Sand is usually available at or near site, so what gets transported is fabric rather than armour stone, at a fraction of the mass and cost per square metre of protection. Placement requires no formwork, no curing and no plant beyond an excavator for the larger units, which makes the system viable for emergency response where a breach must be closed before the next tide or flood peak.
Typical applications include dune and beach revetments, groynes and offshore breakwaters, riverbank and levee protection, scour protection at bridge piers, abutments and outfall structures, temporary cofferdams and diversion bunds, and emergency flood and breach response.
Geosynthetics Africa manufactures FlowTex GSC NW in Johannesburg and supplies across the continent, with delivery to more than 30 countries, technical support on unit sizing and placement design, and installation by our own certified crews.

Typical Applications
View all applicationsCoastal Revetment Construction
Nonwoven sand containers form the structural body of coastal revetments protecting shorelines, promenades, roads and property from wave attack, storm surge and long-term erosion. Placed in stretcher bond on a graded slope with the toe embedded below scour depth, the structure absorbs wave energy across a permeable battered face rather than reflecting it. Grades from NW400 for low-energy exposure to NW4000 for extreme energy.
Dune Reinforcement & Dune-Toe Protection
Placed aprons around bridge piers, outfalls, quay walls, culverts and harbour structures, where turbulence and accelerated flow strip bed material and undermine foundations. Containers conform to the existing bed profile rather than requiring it to be reshaped, and elongation of 68 to 105 percent lets units deform to follow ongoing settlement instead of failing at rigid joints.
Riverine Erosion Control & Bank Stabilisation
Bank protection on rivers, canals and stormwater channels subject to seasonal flow variation, flood peaks and progressive undercutting. Placed against irregular natural bank profiles where puncture resistance and conformability govern, using NW70HD for permanent light-duty work through NW400 and NW1350 for structural bank revetment.
Scour Defence & Structural Scour Protection
Placed aprons around bridge piers, outfalls, quay walls, culverts and harbour structures, where turbulence and accelerated flow strip bed material and undermine foundations. Containers conform to the existing bed profile rather than requiring it to be reshaped, and elongation of 68 to 105 percent lets units deform to follow ongoing settlement instead of failing at rigid joints.
Compatible Systems
View all systemsFlowTex GSC NW40 - Flood Response
Entry-tier 40kg container for temporary flood defence, emergency response, sandbag walls and short-term diversion works. Hand-placeable by a two-person crew without plant. Not specified for permanent coastal armour.
FlowTex GSC NW70 - Flood Response
The 70kg unit on the same entry-tier fabric, for the same temporary and emergency applications where a larger placed mass is wanted. Still within manual handling range for a two-person crew.
FlowTex GSC NW70HD - Riverine Erosion
Same footprint and filled mass as NW70 on 50% heavier cloth, taking CBR puncture from 2.40 kN to 3.60 kN. Specified where the same size unit stays in service permanently rather than seasonally - riverine bank protection, channel shoulders and stormwater outlets.
FlowTex GSC NW400 - Low-Energy Coastal
First of the structural grades, on 800gsm cloth with 9.20 kN CBR puncture resistance. Specified for low-energy coastal revetments, dune-toe protection, cliff-toe buffering and structural riverine works where placement is by excavator.
FlowTex GSC NW1350 - Medium-Energy Coastal
1,350kg placed mass for medium-energy coastal exposure. The most commonly specified grade on South African and Mozambican revetment work, where required unit mass exceeds what a 400kg container can hold against design wave height.

Standard Method Statement
Site preparation. - Excavate to firm base material over the full length of the revetment section. Remove rocks, stumps, root systems and protrusions and backfill the resulting cavities with sand compacted flush - irregular base surfaces prevent uniform bag contact and create stress concentrations under wave loading. Shape the slope to the design batter angle, toe elevation, crest elevation and rear taper before any container is placed; the profile cannot be reshaped afterwards without disturbing installed work. Establish setting-out pegs at toe and crest along the full length, with intermediate references at each end of the working
Underliner. - Lay a nonwoven filter geotextile over the prepared section, covering the full slope length and the base of the toe trench, before any container is placed. It separates the structure from native soil to prevent fines migration under pore-pressure cycling, and provides a consistent bearing surface for the first course. Lap panels down the slope in a shingle pattern, upper panel beneath lower so downslope flow passes over the joint. Minimum overlap 500mm on stable subgrades, 1,000mm on soft or variable ground. Where differential settlement is expected, sew or thermally bond the overlaps rather than free-lapping.
Toe embedment. - Placement begins at the toe and proceeds up the slope. Set the first container along the front line with its longer dimension parallel to the shoreline - this establishes the datum for every course above, and any misalignment introduced here propagates upward. Embed the toe container to a minimum of 1.8 times the significant wave height below design water level, per USACE Coastal Engineering Manual and CIRIA Rock Manual guidance. Toe scour removes lateral support and drives forward rotation and progressive collapse; inadequate embedment is the most commonly documented cause of geotextile revetment failure. Verify against project design wave height before placing any course above the toe.
Filling and closure. - Fill to approximately 80% of theoretical volumetric capacity. Overfilling prevents units conforming to each other and destroys interlock; underfilling produces excessive deformation and creates voids that concentrate hydraulic pressure at joints. Fill must be clean, well-graded sand free of sharp debris, organic contamination and material finer than the container O90. Fill bottom corners fully without creasing or folding before closing. NW40 through NW1350 are filled by hopper or mechanical equipment; NW1800 and NW4000 may be hydraulically filled in place. All closures are double-seamed - a straight pass followed by a zigzag or overlock second pass in UV-stabilised yarn. Single straight-seam closures are not compliant for structural coastal applications.
Stacking and compaction.- Lay successive courses in stretcher bond, each container offset half a bag length from the course below. Never stack in vertical columns: continuous vertical joints open progressively under repeated hydraulic loading, where staggered placement distributes wave-induced force across multiple units. After a minimum run of three containers, level and compact the course with the back of the excavator bucket or a plate compactor before the next is placed. Double-layer configurations provide approximately 17% greater stability than single-layer of the same grade under equivalent wave conditions. Check face alignment against setting-out pegs at every course to prevent progressive drift.
Crest, backfill and sign-off. - Crest containers take wave run-up and overtopping in addition to direct attack; place them last and with the greatest care. Bench the rear profile to receive each successive course, folding the underliner back over completed sections and overlapping at each bench to prevent flanking flow behind the structure. Complete the crest fill, taper off with specified compacted backfill to design elevation, and level the exposed face with sand. Photographic records are taken of each course before the next is placed under IAGI-aligned QA/QC, producing a verifiable installation record for the full structure depth.
