GEOTUBE® GT500 Dewatering Container – (with Sleeve & Top Cover)
GEOTUBE® GT500 dewatering container, 1 m x 1 m, with sleeve and top cover, supplied across Africa by Geosynthetics Africa. GEOTUBE dewatering units from Solmax are fabricated from an engineered woven geotextile that confines solids while liquids pass through the pores of the fabric. As the contained material consolidates, its volume reduces over time. Once fully consolidated, units can be buried in place or cut open and the solids removed to landfill. Used for dewatering sludge, waste and dredged materials. GEOTUBE® is a registered trademark of Solmax.
Overview
GEOTUBE® is Solmax's containment and dewatering technology. Geosynthetics Africa supplies GEOTUBE® GT500 units to projects in Southern, West, East and Central Africa. We support customers from product selection through to installation.
How GEOTUBE dewatering works
GEOTUBE dewatering units are made from an engineered woven geotextile. Slurry is pumped into the unit. The fabric holds back the solids while liquid drains out through its pores. As the material inside consolidates, its volume reduces over time. Once fully consolidated, the unit can be buried in place, or cut open so the solids can be taken to landfill.

Typical Applications
View all applicationsMining Tailings and Slurry Management
GEOTUBE® containers manage mine tailings, coal sludge, and settling pond sediments cost-effectively. Custom-sized units fit between existing structures and can be stacked to maximise capacity within a constrained footprint. Dewatered tailings can be stored in place, used structurally to raise berms, or removed once consolidation is complete — all without expensive dredging or mechanical dewatering equipment.
Dredging and Harbour Sediment Dewatering
GEOTUBE® is the proven solution for dewatering dredged sediment from harbours, rivers, canals, and dams. Large-format units handle the high volumes generated by capital and maintenance dredging programmes. Marine and underwater container variants allow dewatering to be conducted at or very near the dredging site, significantly reducing transport and disposal costs.
Municipal and Industrial Wastewater Treatment
GEOTUBE® simplifies sludge dewatering at sewage treatment works and industrial wastewater facilities, increasing effective drying bed capacity and providing a low-maintenance alternative to belt presses and centrifuges. After flocculant treatment, sludge is pumped into the container where solids are retained and water seeps through the fabric. The process is repeated until the unit reaches capacity, with no mechanical components to operate or maintain.
Water Resource Management and Reclamation
On mining sites where water is a limited and valuable resource, GEOTUBE® technology combined with polymer conditioning releases clean process water from suspended solids the moment they enter the tube. The resulting filtrate is typically of sufficient quality to be recirculated directly into mine processing operations, reducing freshwater demand and supporting closed-loop water management systems.cilities.
Precious Metals Recovery
GEOTUBE® dewatering technology is suited to recovering precious metals from barren and pregnant solution ponds in heap leach operations. By capturing and containing dewatered slurries that still hold gold, silver, or other valuable metals, the cost of treating mine waste can be offset and converted into a recoverable income stream. The system has been successfully applied at gold and silver mines in North America and Australia.
Compatible Systems

Standard large-format dewatering containers custom fabricated in GT500 or GT1000M fabric to project-specific circumference and length. Filled hydraulically via patented Eyeport inlet fittings. Suited to mining tailings, dredged sediment, industrial wastewater, and large-volume sludge management. Suitable for permanent in-place containment or cut-open solids removal.
GEOTUBE® GT500 Dewatering Bag (1m x 1m)
Compact 1m x 1m x 1m dewatering bag in GT500 woven polypropylene fabric. Available with open top or closed top with fill port sleeve. Tensile strength 72 kN/m (MD) and 95 kN/m (CMD), seam strength 65 kN/m, opening size O90 of 250 microns, and water permeability of 30 l/s/m2. Suited to small-volume dewatering, sampling applications, and stormwater sediment management.
GEOTUBE® Mobile Dewatering System (MDS)
Prefabricated GEOTUBE® units fitted into standard roll-off box containers with volumes from 9.8 to 23 m3 depending on container size. Completely prefabricated and ready for use - unroll and connect to fill line. Once filled, the entire system can be transported to a landfill or disposal facility. Suited to operations requiring mobile dewatering capacity across multiple site locations.
GEOTUBE® Marine and Underwater Containers
Specialised GEOTUBE® units for underwater installation using steel frames, suited to nearshore dredging, harbour sediment management, and marine containment where land-based deployment is not available. Units are lowered to the waterbody floor in the frame before hydraulic filling begins.
Installation Guidance
Standard Method Statement
GEOTUBE® Dewatering Containers, Installation Overview - Prepare a level containment area capable of supporting the filled weight of the GEOTUBE® unit. The base should be lined with an impermeable geomembrane to capture and direct effluent to a collection point, with a drainage layer of nonwoven geotextile and aggregate placed beneath the tube to allow filtrate to drain freely. Unroll the GEOTUBE® container in position with all Eyeport inlet and vent fittings orientated upward. Connect pump supply lines and confirm all fittings and discharge routing before filling begins. Conduct a Jar Test prior to the first fill cycle to confirm polymer type, dosage, and slurry compatibility. Fill at a controlled rate to avoid overpressurising the fabric. Allow dewatering to occur passively between fill cycles. Refill progressively until maximum solids volume is reached. For underwater applications, lower the GEOTUBE® unit in its steel frame to the waterbody floor before filling begins.
GEOTUBE® GT500 Dewatering Bag, Installation Overview - Position the GT500 dewatering bag on a stable, drained surface with the fill opening accessible for connection to the slurry feed. For closed-top units, connect the fill port sleeve to the pump or gravity feed line. Support the filled weight of the bag on a frame or pallet as specified. Do not use the positioning belts to lift the filled bag. Bags should not be overfilled beyond the designed fill volume. Allow full drainage before handling. Dispose of filled bags in accordance with the waste classification of the retained solids.
Quality Assurance & Testing
Field QA/QC Checklist
- Material Conformance: Fabric certificates checked for tensile strength, seam strength (ASTM D4884) and opening size; dewatering performance confirmed by a hanging bag (ASTM D7701) or GDT test (ASTM D7880) with the actual sludge and polymer.
- Laydown Area: Area levelled and lined with a drainage layer and, where required, a geomembrane to collect filtrate.
- Filling: Fill ports connected; fill height monitored against the manufacturer's maximum; flocculant dose controlled.
- Filtrate Monitoring: Filtrate clarity and solids monitored; tubes inspected for seam or fabric distress during filling.
