PolyTape RB340 PP Root Barrier
PolyTape RB340 PP Root Barrier is a UV-stabilised, double-coated polypropylene needlepunched nonwoven root barrier - tested and certified to CEN/TS 14416 root penetration resistance standard. 340 g/m², 1.6 mm thick. Available PP-coated both sides or non-coated. Resistant to soil chemicals, mildew and insects. Assessed service life 100+ years buried. Supplied in 1 m and 2 m widths × 25 m and 50 m rolls across 30+ African countries.
Overview
PolyTape RB340 PP Root Barrier is engineered to redirect tree and shrub root development downward - protecting buildings, concrete paths, retaining walls, underground pipelines and urban infrastructure from structural root damage. CEN/TS 14416 certified root penetration resistance. TÜV Austria assessed for 100+ year buried service life.
Resistant to acids, alkalis, oxidation and microbiological degradation at 90% retained strength (EN 14030, EN ISO 13438, EN 12225). Tensile strength 18/18 kN/m MD/CMD (EN ISO 10319). Static puncture resistance 3,250 N (EN ISO 12236). Dynamic perforation resistance 18 mm (EN ISO 13433). Grab tensile strength 1,400/1,300 N MD/CMD (ASTM D4632).
Available in two configurations - PP-coated on both sides for full impermeability where water transmission through the barrier must be prevented; and non-coated where water permeability to surrounding land drains must be maintained. Both configurations carry identical CEN/TS 14416 root penetration certification and identical 100+ year TÜV-assessed service life.
340 g/m² mass per unit area (EN ISO 9864). 1.6 mm nominal thickness (EN ISO 9863-1). Supplied in 1 m and 2 m widths in 25 m and 50 m rolls. ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certified. CE marked. Non-biodegradable - resistant to soil chemicals, mildew and insects. No maintenance. No replacement within the design life of the structure it protects.
Supplied by Geosynthetics Africa across 30+ African countries - the continent's only specified, tested and CEN/TS 14416 certified PP root barrier system.

Typical Applications
View all applicationsUrban Tree Planting & Streetscape
The primary specification for root barrier installation in urban streetscape projects - street tree planting in paved areas, boulevard and median plantings, park perimeter tree pits and municipal greening programmes. PolyTape RB340 redirects root development downward, protecting adjacent kerbing, pavement, underground services and building foundations from lateral root migration. Install vertically to minimum 1,000 mm depth around the full tree pit perimeter before backfilling. The continent's only CEN/TS 14416 certified root barrier - the specified solution for municipal and urban infrastructure projects.
Building & Foundation Protection
Specified for installation between established or newly planted trees and building foundations, basement walls, retaining structures and below-ground waterproofing systems. Tree root damage to building foundations is one of the most expensive structural repair categories in African urban environments - ficus, eucalyptus and jacaranda root systems are particularly aggressive. PolyTape RB340 coated configuration provides full impermeability alongside root exclusion, protecting structural elements for 100+ years without maintenance or replacement.
Concrete Paths, Pavements & Hardscape
Root uplift is the leading cause of concrete path failure, paving displacement and trip hazard creation in African urban environments. PolyTape RB340 installed vertically between street trees and adjacent hardscape redirects root development downward before uplift damage occurs - at a fraction of the cost of path reconstruction. Specified for new paving installations adjacent to existing trees and for tree planting in new paved precincts, commercial developments and residential estates.
Underground Pipeline & Services Protection
Root intrusion into underground water mains, sewer lines, irrigation pipelines, cable ducts and drainage infrastructure is a major maintenance cost driver for African municipalities and utilities. PolyTape RB340 installed as a continuous vertical barrier between planted tree corridors and service trenches provides permanent root exclusion with 3,250 N static puncture resistance and 100+ year buried service life. Non-coated configuration maintains soil drainage function alongside root exclusion where service corridor drainage must be preserved.
Compatible Systems
View all systemsPolyTape RB340 - PP Coated Both Sides
Full impermeability configuration for applications where water transmission through the barrier must be prevented. Specified for building perimeter protection, retaining wall root exclusion, concrete path and pavement protection, and any application where lateral water movement through the barrier zone is not required. Double PP coating on both sides provides maximum root penetration resistance and complete impermeability. The primary specification for hard urban infrastructure root control.
PolyTape RB340 - Non-Coated
Water-permeable configuration for applications where surrounding land drains or soil drainage systems must remain functional alongside root control. The needlepunched nonwoven PP structure blocks root penetration while allowing water to pass through freely - specified for tree pit installations adjacent to drainage infrastructure, permeable paving systems and applications where soil water balance must be maintained. Same CEN/TS 14416 root penetration resistance certification as the coated variant. Same 100+ year assessed service life.
Installation Guidance
Standard Method Statement
Excavation & Preparation - Excavate the barrier trench or tree pit to the specified depth - minimum 600 mm for shrubs and small trees, 1,000 -1,500 mm for large canopy trees. Ensure trench walls are clean, stable and free of sharp stones, roots and debris that could damage or puncture the barrier during installation. Confirm drainage requirements before selecting coated or non-coated configuration.
Barrier Placement - Unroll PolyTape RB340 vertically into the prepared trench with the full specified depth achieved. Maintain barrier in vertical position against the trench wall - do not fold or crease at the base. For tree pit installations, wrap continuously around the full perimeter of the pit with no gaps. The 1 m width suits standard tree pit depths; the 2 m width suits deep installations and pipeline protection corridors without field cutting.
Overlaps & Joining - Overlap all joins by a minimum of 150 mm. Secure overlaps with ground staples or pins before backfilling — unsecured overlaps can open during compaction and create root pathways. For coated configuration, tape overlaps with compatible PP tape for full impermeability at joins. For non-coated configuration, standard stapled overlaps are sufficient.
Backfilling & Completion - Backfill in compacted layers — do not use mechanical compaction directly against the barrier face. Ensure the top edge of the barrier is at or slightly above finished ground level to prevent root bypass over the top of the barrier. Do not cut the barrier below specified depth to accommodate utilities or services — reroute services or increase barrier depth. Record installation depth and configuration in project documentation.
Quality Assurance & Testing
Field QA/QC Checklist
- Delivery & Storage: Materials checked against the delivery note and conformance certificates, stored off the ground, covered from UV and kept clear of sharp objects and fuel.
