Technical Specification of Multi-Axial Geogrids – Tensar InterAx® NX, the Most Advanced Stabilisation Geogrid

Tensar InterAx® geogrid is the latest and most advanced geosynthetic stabilisation product Tensar has developed. It is the product of 12 global development teams and over 10,000 hours of research and development, combining innovations in material science and geometry optimisation to deliver the most efficient mechanically stabilised layer (MSL) available.

Unlike previous generations of stabilisation geogrids - including TriAx - InterAx is manufactured from a coextruded composite polymer sheet which is then punched and oriented. This unique manufacturing process creates a multi-layer product that accommodates aggregate nesting: the outer layers conform to the shape of aggregate particles and hold them in place under compaction and repeated loading. The result is improved interlock, reduced particle movement and a stiffer, longer-lasting stabilised layer.

The geometry of InterAx is the key to its performance. Three unique aperture shapes - hexagonal, trapezoidal and triangular - are formed across continuous and non-continuous ribs. The open, floating hexagon allows for greater compliance and improved aggregate confinement. The increased number of bearing surfaces resists radial displacement of aggregate under load. The continuous parallel rib pitch of 80 mm and rib aspect ratio of greater than 1.0 provide effective lateral restraint across a wider range of aggregate qualities and gradations than previous geogrid generations.

Tensar InterAx geogrids carry BBA Agrément Certificate 23/7063, independently confirming fitness for purpose to stabilise and increase the modulus of a granular layer and its associated trafficking performance and load bearing capacity. Manufactured under BS EN ISO 9001:2015 and BS EN ISO 14001:2015.

Three Questions To Ask Before You Order

1.What is the difference between Tensar InterAx and Tensar TriAx?
Both are stabilisation geogrids - not reinforcement products - but they differ significantly in manufacturing, geometry and performance. TriAx is a punched and drawn single-layer polypropylene geogrid with a single hexagonal aperture geometry and a stiffness ratio of 0.75–0.80. InterAx is manufactured from a coextruded composite polymer sheet, creating a multi-layer product with three aperture geometries (hexagonal, trapezoidal and triangular) and a stiffness ratio of 0.60 - meaning more uniform radial load distribution. The coextrusion process allows aggregate nesting - the outer layers conform to aggregate particle shape - which single-layer geogrids cannot achieve. InterAx delivers higher performance and greater MSL efficiency than TriAx. For projects where cost is the primary constraint, TriAx remains a proven option. For projects where maximum MSL performance is required, InterAx is the correct specification.
2.What does Radial Secant Stiffness mean and why does it matter?
Radial Secant Stiffness is the measure of a stabilisation geogrid's resistance to deformation under load, measured radially (in all directions simultaneously) at 2% strain per EOTA TR041. It is the key performance property for geogrid stabilisation function - the stiffer the geogrid at working strain, the more effectively it confines aggregate and resists deformation of the mechanically stabilised layer. NX750 has a Radial Secant Stiffness of 190 kN/m at 2% strain. NX850 has 270 kN/m. The Stiffness Ratio of 0.60 for both grades means the stiffness is near-uniform in all radial directions - load applied from any direction is resisted with similar efficiency.
3.What is the difference between NX750 and NX850?
Both are InterAx multi-axial geogrids with the same geometry, aperture shapes, rib pitch (80 mm), aspect ratio (>1.0) and certifications. The key difference is stiffness and node thickness. NX750 has a node thickness of 3.5 mm and Radial Secant Stiffness of 190 kN/m at 2% strain. NX850 has a node thickness of 4.5 mm and Radial Secant Stiffness of 270 kN/m - 42% stiffer. NX850 is used where greater aggregate confinement is required under heavier or more frequent loading - for example rail trackbed, heavily trafficked platforms and major road foundations. Both carry BBA 23/7063 certification. Grade selection should be confirmed using Tensar+ design software or via a Tensar Application Suggestion.
4.What other InterAx grades are available beyond NX750 and NX850?
The Tensar InterAx range also includes NX650 (entry grade), NX950 (high-load), NXL (large aperture for coarser aggregate), NX-G (geocomposite with integrated geotextile separator), NX-GD and NX-GN variants. Geosynthetics Africa can confirm availability and provide technical data for these grades. Contact us with your project requirements for grade selection advice and a free Tensar+ Application Suggestion.
5.Can InterAx be used on African road and rail projects?
Yes. InterAx has a BBA-confirmed service life of 120 years and is durable in natural soils with pH 4–9 at soil temperatures below 25°C - covering the range of African subgrade environments. It has been used on roads, railways, working platforms, port pavements and renewable energy access roads globally. Geosynthetics Africa supplies InterAx NX geogrids across 30+ African countries with IAGI-aligned installation support and access to free Tensar+ design assessments.
6.How does InterAx save cost and carbon compared to conventional construction?
InterAx creates a more efficient mechanically stabilised layer, allowing aggregate base thickness to be reduced while maintaining or improving pavement performance. This directly reduces material volume, transport requirements, construction time and embodied carbon. Tensar+ design software quantifies these savings for each project. On the basis of installed projects, potential aggregate savings of up to 50% and carbon emission reductions of up to 65% have been reported. These figures are project-specific - contact Geosynthetics Africa for a free Application Suggestion showing projected savings for your project.

Specification For The Design, Installation Of Multi-Axial Geogrids – Tensar InterAx® NX, the Most Advanced Stabilisation Geogrid

TriAx installation is straightforward - unroll, align, tension and cover. The key requirement is a minimum 150 mm aggregate cover before any plant travels over the geogrid.

Prepare and proof-roll the subgrade to the specified formation level

Unroll TriAx geogrid with the correct side facing up - confirm orientation per design drawings

Pull taut by hand to remove wrinkles and lay flat - no mechanical tensioning required

Adjacent rolls are butt-jointed - no overlap required for stabilisation applications

Place aggregate immediately - do not leave geogrid exposed for more than 30 days

Maintain minimum 150 mm aggregate cover before trafficking with construction plant

Compact in accordance with contract specification
