Technical Specification of PP WeedBlock Ground Cover - AFRICA'S SPECIFIED WOVEN PP GROUNDCOVER

PP WeedBlock Ground Cover is a 100% polypropylene woven groundcover fabric engineered for complete weed suppression in commercial agriculture, horticulture, nurseries, greenhouses, orchards, vineyards and landscaped areas - eliminating the need for herbicidal or insecticidal sprays. Its woven PP structure blocks weed flora at soil level while remaining fully water permeable, allowing rainfall and irrigation to pass through freely and maintaining an aerated, healthy root environment for cultivated plants to thrive.

PP WeedBlock Ground Cover is UV-stabilised for long-term exposure to Africa's high solar radiation index - rated to 700 kLy for black fabric and 420 kLy for beige and green variants (EN 12224). Available in weights from 90 g/m² to 205 g/m², in widths up to 5.25 m single and up to 15.60 m stitched, in standard 100 m rolls, jumbo rolls and mini rolls. Gridlines printed on the fabric surface improve pot and plant positioning accuracy in commercial greenhouse and nursery operations. Available in black, white, green, brown and black/white.

Geosynthetics Africa supplies PP WeedBlock Ground Cover across 30+ African countries with pan-African logistics, in-country project support and technical selection guidance. Reusable over multiple seasons and 100% recyclable at end of service life - PP WeedBlock Ground Cover is the sustainable, chemical-free alternative to herbicide programmes for large-scale African agricultural and horticultural operations.

Three Questions To Ask Before You Order

1.How long will PP WeedBlock last in African conditions?
Black fabric is UV-stabilised to 700 kLy (EN 12224). In Southern African conditions, 700 kLy equates to approximately 5-7 years of direct outdoor exposure depending on latitude and installation angle. Green and beige variants are rated to 420 kLy - approximately 3–5 years exposed. Fabrics installed under partial shade or covered with mulch will significantly outlast these ratings. All figures are based on EN 12224 accelerated weathering - not assumptions.
2.Will PP WeedBlock affect my irrigation system performance?
No. The water flow rate is 900 l/min/m² (EN 11058) - rainfall and drip irrigation pass freely through the woven PP structure without restriction. There is no pooling, no run-off acceleration and no anaerobic root zone risk when the fabric is correctly installed on a graded surface. PP WeedBlock is fully compatible with subsurface drip, overhead irrigation and flood irrigation systems.
3.Can PP WeedBlock be used on slopes and uneven terrain?
Yes. The fabric is supplied in widths up to 5.25 m and lengths up to 2,000 m, and can be cut and overlapped on slopes. On slopes steeper than 1:3, secure with ground staples or anchor pins at maximum 1 m spacing along edges and seams to prevent wind uplift and fabric movement. Overlaps should be a minimum of 150 mm in the direction of water flow.
4.Is PP WeedBlock safe for use around edible crops and certified organic operations?
Yes. PP WeedBlock Ground Cover is a physical weed barrier - no herbicides, insecticides or chemical treatments are applied to or incorporated in the fabric. 100% polypropylene is chemically inert and does not leach into soil or groundwater. It is compatible with organic certification requirements and GAP (Good Agricultural Practice) programmes. Do not apply agro-chemicals directly onto the installed fabric as this will reduce UV stabiliser performance and shorten service life.
5.How do I join or overlap PP WeedBlock on large installations?
Standard field overlaps are 150–200 mm minimum. For permanent installations or high-wind exposure sites, heat-weld or sew overlapping edges. The fabric is available stitched up to 15.60 m wide for large greenhouse bays and plantation rows, reducing the number of overlaps required. Gridlines printed on the fabric surface assist alignment during installation and improve pot and plant positioning accuracy in commercial operations.

Specification For The Design, Installation Of PP WeedBlock Ground Cover - AFRICA'S SPECIFIED WOVEN PP GROUNDCOVER

Surface Preparation - Clear, level and grade the installation area. Remove all weeds, rocks, sharp objects and debris. Ensure positive drainage fall before deployment.

Fabric Deployment - Unroll with gridline side facing up, in the direction of slope. Lay flat with full ground contact - no wrinkles, no stretching. Secure leading edge on windy sites before unrolling.

Overlaps & Securing - Minimum 150 mm overlap in direction of water flow. Secure all edges and seams with ground staples at 1 m maximum spacing. Increase to 300 mm overlap on slopes steeper than 1:3.

Cover & Planting - Plant through fabric using a knife cut or hot-tip punch - do not tear. Cover with mulch or gravel where required. Do not apply agro-chemicals directly onto fabric. Roll and store for seasonal reuse.
