Overview

GC100 is Geosynthetics Africa's professional-grade woven ground cover fabric - a 100 g/m² polypropylene weed suppression textile engineered for long-term outdoor performance across commercial agriculture, nurseries, orchards, landscaping, and utility-scale solar PV installations. Manufactured to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 quality and environmental standards, it is the benchmark ground cover solution for African conditions, supplied continent-wide by Geosynthetics Africa.

The tight woven PP construction physically blocks sunlight from reaching the soil, delivering complete chemical-free weed suppression without herbicides, soil disturbance, or ongoing manual weeding labour. A water flow rate of 900 l/min/m² ensures full permeability for drip and overhead irrigation and natural rainfall, passing moisture directly to the root zone while retaining soil humidity between irrigation cycles and regulating soil temperature - critical for crop performance across African tropical, arid, and subtropical climates.

GC100 black carries a 700 kLy UV resistance rating, making it the correct long-life choice for permanent outdoor installations - including the vegetation management beneath utility-scale solar arrays, where uncontrolled growth causes panel shading, fire risk, and high mowing costs across the 20–25 year operational life of a solar installation. GC100 eliminates that recurring cost with a single installation.

Unlike single-use plastic mulch film, GC100 is reusable across multiple growing seasons - lift, store, re-deploy - and is 100% recyclable at end of service life. Printed gridlines assist accurate pot and plant positioning in nursery and greenhouse environments. Available in black, white, green, and brown, in widths of 5.25 m and roll lengths from 100 m to 2 000 m.

Typical Applications

Agriculture & Horticulture

PP WeedBlock Ground Cover is the primary specification for commercial weed suppression in orchards, vineyards, berry farms, vegetable cultivation and cut flower production. Eliminates herbicide spray programmes, maintains soil moisture and aeration, and supports higher crop yields by removing weed competition for water and nutrients. Available in widths up to 5.25 m for row and bed configurations.

Nurseries & Greenhouses

The standard groundcover specification for commercial nursery benches, greenhouse floors and polytunnel growing areas. Gridlines on the fabric surface improve pot spacing accuracy and presentation. Water permeable at 900 l/min/m² - fully compatible with overhead and drip irrigation systems. Reusable over multiple growing seasons, reducing input cost per cycle.

Landscaping & Urban Greening

PP WeedBlock Ground Cover in green and brown variants provides aesthetically integrated weed control for public parks, corporate landscaping, road medians, golf courses and urban greening projects. Suppresses weed growth under mulch, gravel and bark chip surfaces while allowing water infiltration. UV-stabilised to 420 kLy for sustained outdoor performance.

Solar Energy - Ground Cover & Weed Suppression

PP WeedBlock Ground Cover is increasingly specified on utility-scale solar PV installations across Africa for full-footprint weed suppression beneath panel arrays. Uncontrolled vegetation growth under solar panels reduces panel efficiency through shading, increases fire risk in dry seasons and drives ongoing maintenance costs. PP WeedBlock eliminates all three problems - no herbicides, no mowing, no spray crews. Black fabric rated to 700 kLy UV (EN 12224) for sustained performance under Africa's high solar radiation index. Water permeable at 900 l/min/m² - stormwater infiltration is maintained across the full installation footprint. Available in widths up to 5.25 m to minimise seam lines between panel rows, with jumbo roll formats reducing installation time on large-scale sites.

Compatible Systems

GC100B - PP WeedBlock - Black

The primary specification for commercial weed control. Black fabric delivers maximum light exclusion at soil level for complete suppression of weed flora. UV-stabilised to 700 kLy (EN 12224) - the highest UV rating in the range. Specified for nurseries, greenhouses, orchards, vineyards and large-scale landscaping where long-term seasonal reuse is required.

GC100WB - PP WeedBlock - White/Black

White and black/white reversible configurations for applications requiring soil temperature regulation alongside weed control. The reflective white surface reduces soil heat absorption in high-temperature growing environments - specified for sensitive crop cultivation, tunnel farming and precision horticulture where root zone temperature management is critical.

GC100GBr - PP WeedBlock - Green/Brown

Aesthetically integrated groundcover for landscaped areas, garden centres, public spaces and urban horticulture where visual presentation matters alongside weed suppression. UV-stabilised to 420 kLy (EN 12224). Water permeable woven PP structure maintains soil aeration and healthy root environment. Available in standard, jumbo and mini roll formats.

Installation Guidance

Standard Method Statement

Surface Preparation - Clear, level and grade the installation area. Remove all weeds, rocks, sharp objects and debris. Ensure positive drainage fall before deployment.

Fabric Deployment - Unroll with gridline side facing up, in the direction of slope. Lay flat with full ground contact - no wrinkles, no stretching. Secure leading edge on windy sites before unrolling.

Overlaps & Securing - Minimum 150 mm overlap in direction of water flow. Secure all edges and seams with ground staples at 1 m maximum spacing. Increase to 300 mm overlap on slopes steeper than 1:3.

Cover & Planting - Plant through fabric using a knife cut or hot-tip punch - do not tear. Cover with mulch or gravel where required. Do not apply agro-chemicals directly onto fabric. Roll and store for seasonal reuse.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Field QA/QC Checklist

  • Delivery & Storage: Materials checked against the delivery note and conformance certificates, stored off the ground, covered from UV and kept clear of sharp objects and fuel.
  • Ground Preparation: Area cleared of existing weeds and levelled before laying.
  • Overlaps & Pinning: Overlaps and pin spacing to the manufacturer's guide; edges secured.
  • Cover: Covered with mulch, gravel or other finish where UV exposure is not intended.
