Overview

BERA® Stable Fix Eco SF-ECO-40 is a 40 mm interlocking cellular paving grid for gravel or grass driveways, commercial parking, service routes, paddocks and equestrian yards. Manufactured in Europe from recycled polypropylene/polyethylene, it confines infill to provide a reinforced, permeable surface over a properly prepared foundation.

Loose gravel can spread and rut; unreinforced grass can become muddy under repeated traffic. Stable Fix Eco uses connected cells, anti-slip top nodules and secure interlocking connections to help retain infill and resist panel separation. Gravel, angular stone, soil or grass finishes allow homeowners, developers and contractors to match the surface to their landscape and traffic needs. Its polymer construction has lower thermal conductivity than concrete pavers, supporting more plant-friendly surfaces where grass is used.

This SF-ECO-40 model measures 500 x 500 x 40 mm, covers 0.25 m² per panel and requires four panels per square metre. Weight is 6 kg/m². BERA's February 2026 specification reports empty compressive strength up to 350 t/m² under ISO 844 and gravel-filled strength up to 900 t/m², depending on filling and compaction. These laboratory values describe the panel/infill combination, not an allowable vehicle load. Ground bearing capacity, foundation design, drainage and installation determine traffic suitability. Values for the 40L, 40HD and 50HD models must not be applied to this model.

Panels arrive in pre-assembled 1 m² layers for efficient laying and can be cut around boundaries and obstacles. The open structure allows rainwater into a suitably permeable base, supporting sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) where soil conditions and drainage design permit. A permeable grid alone does not guarantee site infiltration or prevent flooding.

Stable Fix Eco does not have the attached Typar membrane supplied with Gravel Fix Pro. Separate foundation geotextile, base aggregate, bedding, edging and infill are selected for the site. BERA's current brochure lists ISO 9001, REACH and EPD under manufacturing standards; the applicable product-specific declaration should be requested for sustainability submissions. BERA is active in 47+ countries worldwide.

Geosynthetics Africa supplies stock for quick despatch, delivery across Africa and trained installation support. Our turnkey scope can coordinate grids, separate geotextile, edging, material quantities, logistics, installation and QA/QC. Provide your area, location, finished surface and expected traffic for a project quotation; stock and delivery timing are confirmed when quoting.

Install over load-appropriate compacted, permeable foundation layers with the specified separation geotextile and level bedding. BERA recommends at least 50 mm clearance at fixed elements for thermal movement. Use 3-20 mm gravel or angular stone and compact the infill thoroughly. For grass, establish locally suitable vegetation before vehicle use and maintain irrigation, feeding and mowing. Source: BERA Stable Fix Eco brochure SC-SFE_EN-02-26. Typical Applications

View all applications
Paddocks & Equestrian Yards

Project-specific paddock approaches with confined infill. Assess footing, drainage and foundation requirements for animals and vehicles.

Stable Yards & Horse Walker Circuits

Reinforced equestrian yard surfaces where infill and drainage are selected for the intended activity. Request installation support for the layout.

Residential & Commercial Driveways

Gravel or grass driveways for homes, estates and developers, with a foundation designed for expected traffic and ground conditions.

Parking Areas & Service Routes

Permeable parking and service routes. Model-specific test values support selection; the full drainage and pavement system must be designed.

Aircraft Taxiways & Helipads

BERA lists aviation applications. Suitability requires project-specific pavement, geotechnical, drainage and operational design rather than panel strength alone.

Installation Guidance

Standard Method Statement

BERA® Stable Fix Eco installation requires no specialist tools for sheet laying. The critical requirement is a correctly layered and compacted foundation with geotextile separation. All installation must follow the BERA® Stable Fix Eco laying instructions and project-specific engineering requirements.

Foundation Place a 300-500 g/m² non-woven geotextile over the subsoil for layer separation. Prepare a 20-40 cm lower compacted base layer of crushed stone 31.5-63 mm ensuring permeability and strength. Prepare a 5-20 cm upper compacted base layer of crushed stone 12-31.5 mm ensuring permeability and strength. Place a second 300-500 g/m² non-woven geotextile for layer separation. Foundation requirements depend on soil type and expected load - consult a specialist.

Base Preparation Apply a 1-2 cm layer of levelled and compacted builders' angular sand over the upper geotextile. Level in temperatures above 3°C. Install edging to prevent shifting - Specify suitable BERA edging and stakes separately. Leave at least 5 cm expansion gap between the grid and all fixed elements for thermal movement.

Sheet Installation Lay BERA® Stable Fix Eco sheets - no tools needed. Pallets come pre-layered (1 m² = 4 sheets). Position pallets near the work area for faster handling. For slopes, consider extra anchoring. Trim with a grinder or circular saw if required. Light compaction may be applied after installation.

Filling with Grass Choose drought-tolerant grass suited to local African climate. Fill sheets with a 40/30/30% mix of sand, peat and soil, then water thoroughly. Sow seeds, fertilise and maintain with regular watering and mowing. Allow grass to establish through several cuts before driving on it. Expect natural settling of approximately 1 cm, creating room for healthy grass growth.

ALTERNATIVELY: Filling with Gravel Use angular split or gravel 3-20 mm. Compact thoroughly to fill all cavities evenly and ensure surface stability.
