Overview

GeoDrain LD 750 - Heavy-Duty Leakage Detection & Gas Venting Core for Double Liner Systems

GeoDrain LD 750 is engineered for the highest-load leakage detection applications: deep landfill cells, tailings storage facilities (TSFs), and process water dams carrying heavy cover material. Installed as the leakage detection layer between a primary and secondary geomembrane, it provides continuous, measurable early warning if either liner is ever compromised, while the same open flow-channel structure allows it to double as a gas venting layer beneath a liner where landfill gas migration needs to be controlled and directed to a vent point.

The core is formed from a dense field of HDPE dimples (over 23,000 per square metre), keeping the sheet rigid enough to resist crushing under sustained load while leaving open channels for leachate, gas, or leak fluid to travel laterally to a collection sump or monitoring point. The dimpled profile keeps both liners in full, even contact with the core across the sheet, so there are no dead zones and no gaps in leakage detection coverage.

Compression resistance is rated at 1300 kN/m2, the highest in the GeoDrain LD range, with a CBR puncture resistance of 500N. Long-term creep and thickness-retention data (over 87% retained thickness at 500 kPa across a 100-year design life) means the flow channel doesn't crush shut over time, which matters for containment systems and TSFs designed to operate for decades. Even fully loaded between two rigid liners at 500 kPa, LD 750 still carries measurable in-plane flow, keeping leakage detection and gas venting performance intact under full load.

Typical applications: leakage detection layer between primary and secondary liners on Class A landfill barrier systems, tailings storage facilities, mine residue deposits, process water and evaporation dams, and gas venting layers beneath geomembrane liners on any double liner system with severe cover loads.

Typical Applications

View all applications
Landfill Leak Detection Systems

GeoDrain LD cuspated cores provide the leak detection drainage layer between primary and secondary geomembranes in municipal solid waste, industrial waste and hazardous waste landfill cells. Leachate passing through the primary liner transmits in-plane to collection sumps where flow rate is monitored for liner integrity assessment.

Containment Bund Lining Systems

Industrial containment bunds for chemical storage, fuel storage and process facilities require a leak detection layer between double geomembrane liners. GeoDrain LD provides the drainage core at compressive strengths matched to the bund loading and fluid chemistry requirements.

Tailings Storage Facilities

Tailings storage facilities impose high and sustained overburden loads on lining system components. The GeoDrain LD 700 at 1300 kN/m2 with confirmed 100-year creep performance to ASTM D 7361 is specified for TSF leak detection layers where long-term load retention is a regulatory and design requirement.

Dam and Reservoir Lining Systems

Water storage dams and lined reservoirs use GeoDrain LD sheets as the drainage and leak detection layer beneath the primary geomembrane liner. The smooth cuspated interface protects the liner from subgrade contact damage while providing a drainage path for any seepage to monitoring points.

Installation Guidance

Standard Method Statement

Subgrade and Liner Preparation - The geomembrane surface receiving the GeoDrain LD sheet must be inspected and accepted before installation. Remove any debris, aggregate or projections that could damage the cuspated core or the geomembrane interface. Install only after primary geomembrane welding and testing is complete.

Roll Placement and Orientation - Unroll GeoDrain LD sheets in the machine direction with the cuspated core face down against the primary geomembrane. Avoid dragging rolls across the geomembrane surface. On slopes, anchor the top edge before unrolling downslope to prevent sheet movement under self-weight.

Overlaps and Joins - Overlap adjacent sheet edges by a minimum of 300mm. Ensure overlaps are consistent and that no gap exists in the drainage plane between geomembranes. Do not weld or heat-bond the cuspated core - overlaps are maintained by the weight of the overlying geomembrane and overburden.

Secondary Geomembrane Placement - Place the secondary geomembrane directly over the GeoDrain LD sheet. The smooth cuspated surface provides a stable low-damage interface for geomembrane deployment and welding. Do not rest welding equipment directly on the cuspated core - use bridging boards at weld locations if required.

UV Protection and Cover - Cover GeoDrain LD sheets within 28 days of installation. Place the next lining system layer as soon as practicable after secondary geomembrane acceptance. Do not stockpile heavy equipment or materials directly on the installed drainage layer before adequate cover is in place.
