Overview

Reno Mattresses - Flexible Armour for Beds, Banks and Slopes

A Reno mattress is a wide, shallow gabion: large in plan area, typically 0.17m to 0.30m thick, divided internally by diaphragms into compartments at 1m centres. The geometry is the point. Where a gabion basket works as a gravity mass, a mattress works as a flexible armour layer - it follows the profile of the bed or slope it's laid on, deforms with scour and settlement instead of undermining, and stays in place as a continuous revetment.

That flexibility is why mattresses are specified for erosion protection rather than retention. Rigid armour fails at its edges when the bed beneath it moves; a mattress settles into the new profile and keeps covering. The double-twist hexagonal mesh carries the same structural redundancy as the basket range - a broken wire deforms the panel without unravelling it.

Thickness selection. Mattress thickness is set by design flow velocity and the rock size it must hold. 0.17m for low-velocity channels, drainage swales and slope revetment. 0.23m for moderate flow, typical river bank and channel lining duty. 0.30m for higher velocities, spillway aprons, culvert and stilling basin outlets and exposed bed protection. Rock infill is sized to the mattress thickness - smaller and more uniform than basket infill, filling the full compartment depth with no voids.

Specification. Mild tensile steel wire, Class A galvanised to SANS 675, tensile strength 350 – 575 MPa. Hexagonal woven double-twist mesh with a finer aperture than the basket range to suit the smaller infill. Selvedge wire on all panel edges, 2.2mm binding wire supplied. Diaphragms at 1m centres as standard. Supplied flat-packed in standard plan sizes with custom dimensions to order.

Installation governs performance. A nonwoven geotextile separation layer goes beneath every mattress over erodible bed material - without it, fines wash out from under the armour and the mattress settles into a hollow it can't bridge. Lay from downstream working upstream so each panel overlaps the one below in the direction of flow. Anchor all free edges and perimeters with steel pegs at maximum 1m centres. Lace adjacent mattresses along all common edges and lace lids continuously; edge lacing is what makes a field of mattresses behave as one armour layer rather than separate panels.

For permanently submerged, marine, acid mine drainage or otherwise corrosive environments, specify PVC coated mattresses - Class A galvanised wire core with 0.5mm grey PVC extruded over it, never PVC instead of galvanising.

Geosynthetics Africa supplies geotextile, binding wire and pegs with every mattress order, and provides design assistance on thickness and rock sizing against your design velocity.

Typical Applications

Riverbed Scour Protection

iver mattresses are the primary specification for riverbed scour protection on infrastructure crossings, bridge foundations, culvert outlets, weir aprons, and river diversion structures across Africa. Placed flat over the riverbed on a geotextile separation layer and filled with local rock, the mattress confines the protective layer against hydraulic displacement under peak flow - preventing the progressive scour and undermining that destroys unprotected or rip-rap protected riverbeds over successive flood events. Rock mattresses outperform loose rip-rap in high shear stress scour conditions because the wire mesh prevents individual stone displacement.

River Bank Revetment & Longitudinal Bank Protection

Galvanised and PVC coated river mattresses are specified for longitudinal river bank protection on eroding rivers, flood diversion channels, and irrigation canal banks across southern and East Africa. Laid over the bank profile on a geotextile separation layer and filled with local rock, the mattress provides flexible, permeable protection that conforms to the bank shape and accommodates seasonal bank movement without fracturing. Mattresses are combined with box gabion baskets at the bank toe where additional vertical protection is required to prevent undercutting.

Dam Embankment & Spillway Protection

River mattresses provide flexible scour protection for dam embankment faces, spillway aprons, stilling basins, and downstream channel linings on small to medium dams across sub-Saharan Africa. The permeable mattress structure allows pore water pressure to equalise during rapid drawdown after flood events, eliminating the uplift force that causes rigid concrete lining to fail. For stepped spillway applications, mattresses are placed over each step face and laced to gabion basket risers to form a continuous protected spillway profile.

Roadway Drainage & Culvert Protection

River mattresses are widely used in road construction for roadside drain lining, culvert inlet and outlet scour aprons, catch drain protection, and side drain channel lining on road embankments and cuttings. The flexible mattress conforms to the as-built drain profile without precise subgrade preparation, installs rapidly with unskilled labour, and provides a permanent low-maintenance lining that handles the high-velocity concentrated flow conditions at culvert outlets that destroy unlined drains within the first wet season.

Mine Dewatering & Acid Mine Drainage Structures

PVC coated river mattresses in heavy duty 80x100mm specification are used for mine dewatering channel lining, acid mine drainage discharge structures, tailings facility spillway protection, and mine site stormwater management channels where standard galvanised wire would corrode rapidly in the chemically aggressive discharge environment. The dual-layer corrosion protection of PVC coating over Class A Galvanised wire provides the service life required for mine infrastructure intended to remain in service through the operational and closure phases of the mine.

Installation Guidance

Standard Method Statement

River mattress installation requires no specialist plant or equipment. The critical requirements are correct geotextile placement before mattress positioning, correct toe anchorage in a cut-off trench at the base of the protected slope or bed, correct rock infill particle size, and adequate perimeter and panel pegging to resist hydraulic drag under peak flow conditions. Install mattresses working from the downstream end upstream and from the toe of the bank upward - this sequencing ensures that each mattress overlaps the one below in the direction of flow, preventing water from getting beneath the structure at panel joints.

1. Survey and Preparation - Survey the riverbed and bank profile to establish the extent of protection required. Remove all loose vegetation, roots, and large boulders from the surface to be protected. Grade the bank to a uniform slope where possible - steep irregularities in the bank profile cause mattress bridging and void formation beneath the mesh. Excavate cut-off trenches at the top and toe of the protected area, minimum 300mm deep x 300mm wide, for toe and crest anchorage of the mattress panels.

2. Geotextile Placement - Place the non-woven geotextile separation layer over the prepared bed and bank surface before any mattress is positioned. Work from the downstream end upstream, overlapping geotextile panels by a minimum of 300mm in the direction of flow - shingle the overlaps so the upstream panel lies on top of the downstream panel, preventing flow from getting beneath the joint. Peg the geotextile at regular intervals to prevent displacement during mattress placement and filling. The geotextile must extend into the cut-off trenches at the toe and crest.

3. Toe Anchorage - Fold the leading edge of the first mattress row into the excavated toe cut-off trench. Backfill and compact the trench over the folded mattress edge. This buried toe anchorage prevents scour from undermining the base of the mattress and is the most critical single installation detail - an unanchored mattress toe will be progressively undermined by scour and will fail under flood conditions regardless of the quality of the installation above.

4. Mattress Placement and Panel Connection - Unfold mattresses flat onto the prepared geotextile surface. Connect adjacent mattress panels at all common edges using 2.2mm binding wire with a continuous lacing stitch at maximum 150mm centres alternating single and double loops. Lace mattress panels to the side panels and lid before filling. Do not leave unlaced edges between adjacent mattress panels - unlaced edges open under hydraulic loading and allow rock fill to escape.

5. Rock Filling and Lid Closing - Fill mattress cells with rock of the specified particle size to the top of the cell walls. Hand-place the top layer of rock to achieve a level, tight surface. Fold the mattress lid down flat onto the filled cells and lace to all four edges using 2.2mm binding wire at maximum 150mm centres. Peg through the mattress lid and mesh body into the bank at maximum 1m centres across the full mattress area. On steep bank slopes, install straining wires along the length of each mattress row, anchored at the crest, to resist downslope gravity creep of the filled mattress.
