Coir SoilLock - 350gsm & 450gsm Coconut Fibre Erosion Control Blankets

Coir SoilLock is Africa's only coconut fibre erosion blanket range offering both 350gsm standard grade and 450gsm mining grade in one supply. Where competing suppliers offer a single 330-350gsm product, Geosynthetics Africa supplies the heavier, stronger 450gsm grade specifically for the high rainfall intensity, steep slopes and aggressive flow velocities found on African mining operations, tailings dam embankments and large infrastructure projects. Both grades are 100% coconut fibre with photodegradable PP netting - biodegrading completely within 2 to 3 years with zero synthetic residue.

Technical Specification of Coir SoilLock - 350gsm & 450gsm Coconut Fibre Erosion Control Blankets

Coir SoilLock erosion blankets are manufactured from 100% untreated coconut husk fibre contained between photodegradable polypropylene netting on both faces, stitched with brown PP thread. Coconut coir is a stiffer, denser natural fibre than jute, delivering superior performance on steeper slopes, in higher rainfall environments and in wet channel and stream bank applications where jute would degrade too rapidly or lack sufficient tensile resistance to remain anchored under hydraulic loading.

The Coir SoilLock 350 at 350-360 g/m2 is the standard engineered specification for slope stabilisation, embankment protection, stream bank reinstatement and revegetation on civil, infrastructure and environmental projects. With MD tensile strength of 3.14 kN/m confirmed to ASTM D4595 it delivers higher structural performance than competing 330-350gsm coir blankets in the South African market, while the 2.4m roll width and 120m2 per roll format maximises coverage and minimises installation joins on large slope areas.

The Coir SoilLock 450 at 450-460 g/m2 is the mining grade specification - the only 450gsm coir erosion blanket designed and tested for African high risk environments. With MD tensile strength of 3.25 kN/m and thickness of 6-7mm it is designed for the conditions found on African mining operations: steep tailings dam embankments, high-intensity seasonal rainfall, aggressive surface runoff and slope areas that cannot afford re-installation if the erosion blanket fails. At 450gsm it provides measurably greater fibre density, rainfall energy dissipation and hydraulic uplift resistance than any standard grade coir product available locally.

Both Coir SoilLock grades biodegrade completely within 2 to 3 years, adding organic material to the soil profile and leaving zero permanent synthetic residue. The photodegradable PP netting breaks down under UV exposure, making both grades suitable for environmentally sensitive sites, riparian zones, wetland rehabilitation and mining closure projects where synthetic residue in the soil or waterway cannot be accepted.

Three Questions To Ask Before You Order

1.What makes the 450gsm grade a mining specification?
Mining operations in Africa present the most demanding conditions for erosion control blankets - steep tailings dam embankments, high-intensity seasonal rainfall, poor cohesion soils and slow vegetation establishment in disturbed mine soils. The 450gsm grade provides greater fibre density, higher tensile strength at 3.25 kN/m MD and greater thickness at 6-7mm compared to standard civil grades. It remains anchored under higher hydraulic forces and provides greater soil particle trapping capacity during the longer establishment periods typical on mine rehabilitation sites.
2.How do I specify Coir SoilLock on a project?
For standard civil slopes, embankments and stream bank reinstatement specify Coir SoilLock 350 - 350gsm coconut fibre erosion control blanket with photodegradable PP netting, MD tensile strength 3.14 kN/m minimum to ASTM D4595. For mining embankments, steep slopes and high-rainfall applications specify Coir SoilLock 450 - 450gsm coconut fibre erosion control blanket with photodegradable PP netting, MD tensile strength 3.25 kN/m minimum to ASTM D4595. Contact our technical team for slope-specific grade selection guidance.
3.Can Coir SoilLock be used on permanently wet channel banks?
Both grades suit moderate to high flow velocity channel bank applications during vegetation establishment. In permanently wet channels with continuous base flow, biodegradation rate increases and service life may be shorter than the 2 to 3 year guideline. For permanent hard armour channel lining specify GeoStrata HDPE geocells. For temporary protection during vegetation establishment on channel banks the 450gsm grade provides maximum resistance to hydraulic uplift.

Specification For The Design, Installation Of Coir SoilLock - 350gsm & 450gsm Coconut Fibre Erosion Control Blankets

Coir SoilLock 350 Installation - Seed slope before or after installation - hydroseeding before laying is recommended on large areas. Excavate 150mm anchor trenches at crest and toe. Unroll from top downward, laying loosely to follow ground contours. Overlap adjacent lengths by 150mm minimum. Peg at 500mm to 1m intervals with 500mm pegs. Backfill and compact both anchor trenches. Plants can be inserted through mesh after installation.

Coir SoilLock 450 Installation - Same method as 350 with these differences: the 450 is heavier and mechanical assistance is recommended on steep slopes for unrolling. Reduce peg spacing to 500mm on steep mining embankments. Ensure anchor trench at crest is a minimum 150mm deep and firmly compacted - the heavier blanket creates greater pull on the anchor under storm flow. On tailings dam embankments install from the crest downward in one continuous length where possible to minimise transverse joints on the slope face.
