Technical Specification of Square Weldmesh Gabion Baskets - Architectural & Feature Wall Gabions

Square weldmesh gabion baskets are gabion structures manufactured from Class A Galvanised mild tensile steel wire welded at every intersection to form a rigid square grid mesh panel. Where hexagonal woven mesh is the correct specification for civil engineering, river training, and hydraulic applications requiring flexibility and structural redundancy under dynamic loading, square weldmesh is the correct specification for architectural, landscaping, boundary wall, and feature wall applications where the clean, uniform square grid aesthetic is the primary design requirement and the structure is not subject to differential settlement, dynamic loading, or hydraulic forces.

Square weldmesh gabion baskets are manufactured and supplied by Geosynthetics Africa in three formats - fully assembled box baskets for freestanding gabion walls and retaining structures, flat mesh panels for custom site-fabricated dimensions and cladding applications, and mesh rolls for large-area coverage and custom cutting on site. Available mesh aperture options are 50x50mm, 50x100mm, and 75x75mm with wire diameter of 3.00mm or 3.15mm Class A Galvanised in all cases. The square grid geometry fills more quickly than hexagonal mesh and does not bulge as easily under infill pressure - a practical advantage on architectural walls where face aesthetics are critical.

The visual versatility of square weldmesh gabion walls is their primary design advantage. Unlike hexagonal woven mesh where the infill rock is the dominant visual element, the clean square grid of weldmesh creates a geometric pattern that integrates more easily with contemporary architectural finishes - face brick, plaster, corten steel, timber, and glass. Rock infill selection further defines the aesthetic - golden sandstone, white quartz, black basalt, river pebbles, slate, and recycled glass all produce dramatically different finished wall characters within the same basket system. Geosynthetics Africa can advise on rock supply and selection for decorative gabion wall applications.

Square weldmesh is also used for gabion pillars, gabion lettering and signage, gabion furniture, gabion planters, gabion bar counters, sound barriers, raised garden beds, and internal feature walls - applications where the geometric rigidity of the weldmesh panel provides a structurally precise finished form that the flexible hexagonal woven mesh cannot deliver. For small garden gabion and terrace wall applications where rock supply is limited or expensive, the Gab-Bloc mini gabion in 300x300mm cross-section - available in square weldmesh or hexagonal woven mesh - reduces the volume of rock required significantly versus a standard basket system.

Three Questions To Ask Before You Order

1.What is the difference between square weldmesh and hexagonal woven mesh gabions and when should I use each?
Hexagonal woven double-twist mesh is the correct specification for all civil engineering, river training, mining, and hydraulic applications where flexibility, dynamic loading, and long-term structural redundancy are required. The double-twist connection provides resistance to opening when individual wires are damaged — a single broken wire does not open the structure. Square weldmesh is the correct specification for architectural, landscaping, boundary wall, and feature wall applications where the clean square grid aesthetic is the primary requirement and the structure is not subject to dynamic loading, differential settlement, or hydraulic forces. Never specify weldmesh for river mattress applications - it is not suitable
2.What aperture size should I specify for my architectural gabion wall?
50x50mm aperture with 3.00mm wire is suited to smaller decorative stone, glass bottle infill, and fine aesthetic applications where a tight grid pattern is desired. 50x100mm aperture with 3.15mm wire is the general purpose specification for standard rock infill on feature and boundary walls. 75x75mm aperture with 3.15mm wire suits larger feature walls, sound barriers, and gabion pillars where a bolder grid becomes a deliberate architectural element. For custom aperture sizes outside these three standard options, contact us for availability and lead time.
3.What can I fill square weldmesh gabion baskets with?
Square weldmesh gabion baskets accept any stable solid infill — unweathered rock in 100-250mm particle size for structural walls, decorative stone in any colour and size suited to the mesh aperture, glass bottles, timber logs, slate offcuts, roof tiles, building rubble, recycled glass, and locally available stone. The infill defines the finished aesthetic entirely. For structural retaining and boundary walls, use hard unweathered rock of minimum density 2.60 t/m3. For decorative and feature wall applications, the infill choice is limited only by the mesh aperture size and the designer's vision.
4.Can square weldmesh gabion panels be cut and fabricated to custom shapes on site?
Yes. Square weldmesh supplied in flat panel or roll format can be cut, folded, and connected on site using binding wire or structural clips to suit any design geometry — curved walls, angled returns, gabion pillars, custom height sections, and non-standard plan shapes. Panels can also be used as cladding over existing concrete or masonry walls, creating the gabion aesthetic without the full basket structure and rock volume. Contact our team with your design drawings for advice on panel layout and fabrication for custom applications.
5.Do I need a geotextile behind a square weldmesh gabion retaining wall?
Yes — for any gabion retaining wall, including square weldmesh, a non-woven geotextile separation layer must be placed between the gabion structure and the retained soil to prevent fines migration through the mesh aperture. For purely aesthetic feature walls with no retained soil - freestanding decorative walls, cladding panels, and planters - a geotextile is not required. Geosynthetics Africa supplies the correct geotextile specification with every structural gabion order.
6.What is the Gab-Bloc and when should I use it?
The Gab-Bloc is a mini gabion basket with a 300x300mm cross-section — available in 1x0.3x0.3m and 2x0.3x0.3m sizes with internal diaphragm spacers at 1m intervals. It is designed for small retaining walls up to 1.5m height, garden terrace walls, feature walls, and raised garden beds where a standard 1m x 1m cross-section basket is oversized and over-specified. The small cross-section reduces the rock volume required significantly — a practical advantage where rock is scarce or expensive near site. Available in square weldmesh or hexagonal woven mesh. First developed in South Africa in 2004, the Gab-Bloc has been used successfully on residential and commercial projects across South Africa and Botswana.

Specification For The Design, Installation Of Square Weldmesh Gabion Baskets - Architectural & Feature Wall Gabions

Square weldmesh gabion installation requires no specialist plant or equipment. Fully assembled basket installation follows the same sequence as hexagonal woven mesh gabion baskets - erect, connect adjacent panels with binding wire, fill, and close lids. For flat panel and roll-format weldmesh, panels are cut to size, folded to the required box or cladding profile on site, and connected using binding wire or structural clips. The rigid weldmesh panel holds its shape during erection and filling without the tensioning frame required for flexible hexagonal woven mesh.

1. Foundation and Geotextile - For retaining wall applications, excavate and compact the foundation to the specified level. Place a non-woven geotextile separation layer between the gabion structure and the retained soil before basket placement. For freestanding decorative walls with no retained soil, a geotextile is not required. Ensure the foundation is level across the full wall length before placing the first basket course - weldmesh panels are rigid and do not accommodate foundation irregularity as readily as flexible woven mesh.

2. Basket Erection and Connection - Unfold flat-packed basket panels and fold up the sides and ends to form the box. Connect all vertical edges of adjacent baskets using 2.2mm binding wire at maximum 150mm centres alternating single and double loops. The rigid weldmesh panel holds its erect shape without a tensioning frame - no pegging or tensioning is required before filling. Connect adjacent basket lids together across the full wall width after filling each course.

3. Infill Placement - Fill baskets in layers, placing face stones by hand to achieve the desired face aesthetic. Machine infill of the basket interior is acceptable once the face layer is established. For decorative infill - glass bottles, decorative stone, or mixed materials - place infill entirely by hand to control the visual arrangement on the exposed face. Do not overfill - the infill surface must be level with or slightly below the basket top to allow the lid to close and connect flat.

4. Lid Connection and Subsequent Courses - Connect the basket lid to all four sides using 2.2mm binding wire at maximum 150mm centres. Connect adjacent basket lids to each other across the wall. Place the next basket course directly on the connected lids and repeat. For gabion pillar construction using flat panels, build each panel layer and connect with binding wire at all corners and intermediate panel edges before infilling. For sound barrier construction, ensure the rock infill density is maximised - use 100-250mm unweathered rock at minimum 2.60 t/m3 density for maximum noise attenuation performance.
