Overview

BERA® Grass Fix Eco+ reinforces grass parking spaces, residential driveways, overflow car parks and emergency access routes while retaining a planted, permeable surface. The open honeycomb structure and lateral openings support root growth; interlocking panels and integrated underside anchors help resist movement. It is suited to homeowners, developers, landscape contractors, resorts and public green-space projects.

Wheel traffic on unreinforced lawns can cause ruts, mud and damaged grass. Grass Fix Eco+ distributes surface loading through a cellular grid over a prepared foundation. BERA reports 170 t/m² empty-panel strength under EN 124-1:2017. This is a laboratory panel value, not an allowable vehicle load or a guarantee against rutting: foundation design, drainage, infill, grass establishment and maintenance determine the installed outcome.

Made from recycled HDPE, the grid has lower thermal conductivity than concrete grass pavers. BERA positions this as a more plant-friendly alternative to heat-retaining concrete. Permeable cells allow rainwater through and retain moisture for vegetation. Healthy grass still requires a locally suitable species, sufficient growing medium, watering and maintenance, particularly during dry African seasons.

Panels measure 550 x 380 x 31 mm, or 51 mm high including anchors, and cover 0.21 m² each. Approximately 4.76 panels cover one square metre. The manufacturer lists 140 panels per pallet, covering 29.4 m². The anti-slip top, secure interlocking connections and easy trimming support efficient installation around trees, fences and irregular boundaries.

Grass Fix Eco+ has a published Environmental Product Declaration and BERA lists REACH, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 manufacturing standards. The recycled material is recyclable at end of life; panels are UV and frost resistant. BERA operates in 47+ countries worldwide. This describes the manufacturer's international presence, rather than a verified installation count for every model.

Grass Fix Eco+ is an open grass grid and does not include the attached Typar membrane supplied with Gravel Fix Pro. Foundation separation geotextile, drainage, bedding, edging and grass infill must be specified as part of the installed system. It can support sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) where the base, soil and drainage design accommodate rainfall.

Geosynthetics Africa offers stock for quick despatch, Africa-wide delivery and trained installation support. Our turnkey scope can combine grass grids, suitable separate geotextile, edging, logistics, installation and project QA/QC, giving clients one coordinated supply and installation package. Send the area, project location and expected vehicle use for product selection and a quotation. Stock quantities and lead times are confirmed when quoting.

Installation requires a load-appropriate, permeable foundation, level bedding and restrained edges. BERA advises at least 50 mm clearance at fixed boundaries for thermal movement. Lay interlocking panels in a stretcher bond, fill with the specified growing medium and establish locally suitable grass before opening to vehicles. Installation Guidance

Standard Method Statement

BERA® Grass Fix Eco+ installation requires no specialist tools. The critical requirements are correct foundation preparation, proper edging and allowing grass to fully establish before vehicle use.

1. Foundation A 20–40 cm compacted crushed stone and gravel base depending on expected load. For vehicle use: place a 300–500 g/m² non-woven geotextile over the compacted layer to prevent instability.

2. Base Preparation Place a 5–7 cm levelled layer of mixed sand and crushed stone over the geotextile. Level above 3°C. Install edging - BERA® Edging Systems (available on request) include stakes for quick installation. Leave a minimum 5 cm gap between sheets and all fixed elements (walls, edges, obstacles) for thermal expansion.

3. Sheet Laying Once foundation, base and edging are complete, lay sheets by hand in stretcher bond pattern - no tools required. Pallets of 140 sheets (29.4 m²) can be positioned directly beside the working area. Integrated anchors provide additional stability. Use extra anchoring for slopes. Trim with a handsaw or circular saw if required. Light compaction may be applied after installation.

4. Grass Establishment Fill honeycomb cells with a 40/30/30% mix of sand, peat and soil. Water thoroughly before sowing. Use drought-resistant grass suited to local climate. Apply fertiliser and water regularly to ensure even establishment. Allow grass to establish through several cuts before opening to vehicle traffic. Expect natural soil settling of approximately 1 cm - this is normal and leaves space for healthy grass growth. Maintain with regular watering, fertilising and cutting.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Field QA/QC Checklist

  • Sub-base Design: Sub-base type and thickness confirmed for the traffic load class, and permeability checked so the system drains as designed.
  • Sub-base Compaction: Sub-base compacted and levelled to the falls and tolerance in the BERA installation guide.
  • Panel Placement: Panels laid with the geotextile backing down and connected with the integrated click joints; expansion gaps left at edges.
  • Infill: Panels filled with the specified infill (gravel grading, or soil and seed for grass systems) and topped up after settlement.
  • Handover: Load class and use confirmed with the client; maintenance instructions provided.
