Technical Specification of BERA® Grass Fix Eco+ - Grass Parking Pavers and Driveway Grids

BERA® Grass Fix Eco+ is a recycled HDPE grass reinforcement grid for homeowners, developers and landscape contractors creating green parking, overflow car parks, driveways and access routes. Its open cells and lateral openings support grass roots while the grid reinforces the surface over a prepared foundation.

Unreinforced lawns can rut and become muddy under traffic. The honeycomb structure, secure interlocks and underside anchors help stabilise a grassed surface. HDPE has lower thermal conductivity than concrete grass pavers, which BERA positions as more plant-friendly. Healthy grass still needs suitable growing medium, a locally appropriate species, water and maintenance.

The 550 x 380 x 31 mm panel is 51 mm high including anchors, covers 0.21 m² and weighs approximately 0.9 kg. Coverage is 4.76 panels/m², with 140 panels or 29.4 m² per pallet. Empty-panel strength is 170 t/m² under EN 124-1:2017. This test value is not a permissible vehicle load; the foundation, infill and drainage determine traffic suitability.

Grass Fix Eco+ has a published EPD, with REACH, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 listed by BERA. It is an open grid without an attached Typar membrane. Geosynthetics Africa can supply separate foundation geotextile, edging and grids in a turnkey package including stock despatch, Africa-wide logistics, trained installation support and QA/QC. BERA's 47+ country presence describes the manufacturer, rather than installations of every model.

Three Questions To Ask Before You Order

1.Are grass pavers suitable for parking and driveways?
Grass Fix Eco+ is designed for reinforced green parking and access routes. Soil, foundation, drainage, growing medium and grass care must match traffic. It reduces the vulnerability of unreinforced lawns but does not guarantee a damage-free lawn under every use.
2.What does 170 t/m² strength mean?
It is the manufacturer-reported empty-panel test under EN 124-1:2017. It is not a vehicle mass or permissible axle-load rating. Confirm foundation and expected traffic with the project designer.
3.Which grass and infill should I use?
Use a locally suitable drought-tolerant species. BERA's guide specifies 40/30/30% sand, peat and soil, watering before sowing and regular feeding and irrigation. Review growing-medium suitability for the local project. Approximately 10 mm settlement is expected.
4.Is geotextile attached to Grass Fix Eco+?
No. It is an open grass grid. BERA's general vehicle-use guide includes separate 300-500 g/m² nonwoven geotextile, a 200-400 mm compacted base and 50-70 mm bedding. These indicative layers require site design. Retain at least 50 mm clearance at fixed elements.
5.Can I install it on a slope?
Slope use needs site-specific assessment of grade, anchoring, drainage and edge restraint. Integrated anchors are provided; additional anchors may be needed. Send the layout and gradient for installation support.
6.When can cars use the grass surface?
Establishment depends on species, weather and irrigation. Let the grass establish before vehicle use; BERA's related grass-grid guidance calls for several cuts. Maintain watering, feeding and mowing rather than assuming an immediate finished lawn.
7.Do you supply and install across Africa?
Geosynthetics Africa offers stock for quick despatch, Africa-wide delivery and trained installation support. Request supply or turnkey grids, geotextile, edging, installation and QA/QC. Stock quantities and timing are confirmed with the quotation.

Specification For The Design, Installation Of BERA® Grass Fix Eco+ - Grass Parking Pavers and Driveway Grids

BERA® Grass Fix Eco+ installation requires no specialist tools. The critical requirements are correct foundation preparation, proper edging and allowing grass to fully establish before vehicle use.

1. Foundation A 20–40 cm compacted crushed stone and gravel base depending on expected load. For vehicle use: place a 300–500 g/m² non-woven geotextile over the compacted layer to prevent instability.

2. Base Preparation Place a 5–7 cm levelled layer of mixed sand and crushed stone over the geotextile. Level above 3°C. Install edging - BERA® Edging Systems (available on request) include stakes for quick installation. Leave a minimum 5 cm gap between sheets and all fixed elements (walls, edges, obstacles) for thermal expansion.

3. Sheet Laying Once foundation, base and edging are complete, lay sheets by hand in stretcher bond pattern - no tools required. Pallets of 140 sheets (29.4 m²) can be positioned directly beside the working area. Integrated anchors provide additional stability. Use extra anchoring for slopes. Trim with a handsaw or circular saw if required. Light compaction may be applied after installation.

4. Grass Establishment Fill honeycomb cells with a 40/30/30% mix of sand, peat and soil. Water thoroughly before sowing. Use drought-resistant grass suited to local climate. Apply fertiliser and water regularly to ensure even establishment. Allow grass to establish through several cuts before opening to vehicle traffic. Expect natural soil settling of approximately 1 cm - this is normal and leaves space for healthy grass growth. Maintain with regular watering, fertilising and cutting.
