Technical Specification of PVC Geomembrane Liners - South Africa's Most Accessible Dam & Pond Liner

Reinforced PVC geomembranes are polyester-scrim-backed flexible liners manufactured by knife-over-roller or air-knife coating processes, combining a UV-stabilised PVC formulation with an internal high-tenacity polyester scrim reinforcement layer. The scrim provides dimensional stability, enhanced tear resistance and improved tensile performance over unreinforced PVC - critical properties for exposed dam and reservoir applications where wind uplift, hydrostatic pressure and subgrade irregularity are design conditions.

Geosynthetics Africa supplies Tecco-manufactured reinforced PVC geomembranes in four grades - 550gsm, 700gsm, 720gsm (potable water certified) and 800gsm. All grades incorporate UV stabilisers and are available in standard widths for field welding or prefabricated panel supply.

PVC geomembranes are the cost-efficient specification for agricultural dams, irrigation storage, aquaculture ponds and community water projects where HDPE's chemical resistance ceiling is not required and EPDM's rubber elasticity is not the governing design parameter. Their flexibility, weldability and conformance to irregular earthen substrates make them a practical, well-established liner choice for the majority of farm dam and small-to-medium reservoir applications across Africa.

Three Questions To Ask Before You Order

1.What is the difference between the four PVC grades?
The grades differ in weight per square metre, which directly correlates to PVC coating thickness, tear resistance and puncture resistance. 550gsm is the entry-level grade for small agricultural applications. 700gsm is the standard specification for most farm dams and irrigation reservoirs. 720gsm is the potable water certified grade for drinking water applications. 800gsm is the heavy-duty grade for large reservoirs and commercial schemes. Our technical team can assist with grade selection based on your project dimensions, subgrade conditions and service requirements.
2.Is the 720gsm grade certified for potable water storage?
Yes. The R-PVC720P grade uses a food-grade PVC formulation certified for direct potable water contact, suitable for municipal reservoirs, community water storage and drinking water infrastructure. The other grades - 550gsm, 700gsm and 800gsm - are not certified for potable water contact and should not be specified for drinking water applications.
3.How does reinforced PVC compare to HDPE for dam lining?
Reinforced PVC is more flexible and conformable than HDPE, making it easier to install over irregular earthen substrates without the subgrade preparation demands of HDPE. It is cost-competitive for agricultural and small-to-medium civil applications. HDPE outperforms PVC in chemical resistance, long-term UV stability and service life for large-scale, high-consequence containment such as mining TSFs, heap leach pads and landfill base liners. For most farm dams and irrigation reservoirs, reinforced PVC is a well-proven and practical specification.
4.Can PVC liners be supplied in custom panel sizes?
Yes. Panels can be factory-fabricated to custom dimensions to minimise field seaming on site. Submit your project drawings or dimensions to our technical team for a panel layout schedule and quotation.

Specification For The Design, Installation Of PVC Geomembrane Liners - South Africa's Most Accessible Dam & Pond Liner

Subgrade preparation for reinforced PVC follows the same fundamentals as all geomembrane installations: the substrate must be smooth, compacted, and free of protrusions, roots, sharp stones and standing water before liner deployment. A needle-punched geotextile protection layer is recommended between the subgrade and PVC membrane on earthen embankments where subgrade particle size or construction conditions present a puncture risk - PVC is more susceptible to puncture than HDPE and subgrade quality directly affects liner service life.

Field seams are made using hot-air welding equipment producing either single or double-track welds. All field seams must be tested — typically by air-lance or vacuum-box method - before the liner is covered or water is introduced. Where large panel fabrication has been completed in factory conditions, field seam frequency is reduced and installation time shortened. All pipe penetrations and fittings must be sealed using compatible PVC flashing and welded connections - mechanical fastening alone is not acceptable for water-retaining applications.
