What thickness of HDPE liner do I need for a farm water pan or dam?

For agricultural water pans and farm dams, 0.75 mm to 1.0 mm HDPE is common on smaller, well-prepared pans or where the liner is covered, while 1.5 mm is the general specification for larger permanently exposed storage and anything holding significant head. Selection depends on exposure, service life, subgrade quality, livestock or human access, and whether a protective geotextile cushion is used underneath. When is the best time of year to schedule a lining project?

The dry windows, roughly January to February and June to September. Welding cannot proceed on wet seam surfaces, and the long rains from March to May and short rains from October to December affect site access, open cell conditions and subgrade preparation. We plan programmes around these seasons and build weather contingency into the schedule.

How do you deal with black cotton soil?

Expansive black cotton clay across Nairobi, Athi River, Kitengela, the Kano plains and much of western Kenya swells and shrinks dramatically between seasons. On roads and platforms we use a separation and filtration geotextile with a biaxial geogrid to stop aggregate punching into the subgrade and to spread load. Under liners the focus shifts to moisture conditioning, compaction control and anchor trench detailing so seasonal ground movement does not stress the sheet.
