Technical Specification of GeoDrain LD - Leak Detection & Liner Drainage Sheets

GeoDrain LD leak detection and liner drainage sheets are high-compressive cuspated drainage cores designed for use within geomembrane lining systems. Installed between primary and secondary geomembranes, they provide a continuous in-plane drainage layer that detects and transmits leachate flow under high overburden loads - confirming the integrity of the primary liner and protecting the secondary liner from hydraulic pressure buildup.

The cuspated core geometry provides a smooth interface against geomembranes on both faces while maintaining high in-plane flow capacity under load. This smooth contact protects the geomembrane surface from stress concentration and puncture that would occur with a conventional drainage aggregate layer. The cuspated structure retains meaningful flow capacity at loads up to 500 kPa, making the range suitable for deep landfill cells, high-load containment bunds and tailings storage facilities.

The GeoDrain LD range covers four compressive strength grades. The LD 420 at 700 kN/m2 and LD 500 at 1000 kN/m2 address standard and intermediate landfill cell specifications. The LD 700 at 1300 kN/m2 is the highest compressive strength product in the range, designed for deep cells and high-load containment where long-term creep resistance under sustained loading is a design requirement - the LD 700 retains 87.39% of its thickness at 500 kPa over a 100-year design life. The GeoDrain LD 6 is a 6mm HDPE cuspated core for applications requiring a thinner profile and is also available with a bonded PP geotextile on request.

All GeoDrain LD products are manufactured from polyolefin mix (LD 420, LD 500, LD 700) or HDPE (LD 6) and carry UV stabilisation and high oxidative resistance. The LD 500 and LD 700 carry High Pressure OIT values above 600 minutes, confirming long-term antioxidant retention under aggressive leachate conditions. All products must be covered within 28 days of installation.

GeoDrain LD sheets are locally stocked in South Africa and supplied across sub-Saharan Africa. Full technical support is available for lining system design, specification review and installation guidance.

Three Questions To Ask Before You Order

1.What is the difference between a leak detection layer and a drainage geocomposite?
A drainage geocomposite in civil applications manages groundwater against structures. A leak detection layer in a lining system sits between two geomembranes and serves a different function - it transmits any leachate that passes through the primary liner to a collection point where flow can be monitored. The cuspated core geometry is specifically shaped to provide a smooth contact surface against geomembranes rather than the bonded geotextile face used in civil drainage geocomposites.
2.Which LD grade should I specify for my project?
For standard municipal solid waste landfill cells at normal burial depths, the LD 420 at 700 kN/m2 covers most specifications. For intermediate load applications or where leachate chemistry is aggressive, the LD 500 at 1000 kN/m2 with confirmed OIT above 600 minutes is the appropriate grade. For deep cells, high-load containment and tailings storage facilities where long-term creep under sustained load is a design consideration, specify the LD 700 at 1300 kN/m2 with 100-year ASTM D 7361 creep data. Contact our technical team for a site-specific recommendation.
3.Why is the LD 6 roll width narrower than the other LD products?
The GeoDrain LD 6 is supplied at 0.97m width in 100m rolls, compared to 2.35m to 4.7m widths for the LD 420, 500 and 700. The narrower format suits detailed lining system work including edge drainage, sump details and locations where the full-width sheet would require excessive trimming. The LD 6 is also available with a bonded PP geotextile for applications requiring a combined drainage and filtration layer.
4.Do GeoDrain LD sheets need to be covered after installation?
Yes. All GeoDrain LD products must be covered within 28 days of installation to protect against UV degradation. On active lining system construction programmes this is typically managed within the normal cell construction sequence - geomembrane installation follows the drainage layer without extended exposure periods.

Specification For The Design, Installation Of GeoDrain LD - Leak Detection & Liner Drainage Sheets

Subgrade and Liner Preparation - The geomembrane surface receiving the GeoDrain LD sheet must be inspected and accepted before installation. Remove any debris, aggregate or projections that could damage the cuspated core or the geomembrane interface. Install only after primary geomembrane welding and testing is complete.

Roll Placement and Orientation - Unroll GeoDrain LD sheets in the machine direction with the cuspated core face down against the primary geomembrane. Avoid dragging rolls across the geomembrane surface. On slopes, anchor the top edge before unrolling downslope to prevent sheet movement under self-weight.

Overlaps and Joins - Overlap adjacent sheet edges by a minimum of 300mm. Ensure overlaps are consistent and that no gap exists in the drainage plane between geomembranes. Do not weld or heat-bond the cuspated core - overlaps are maintained by the weight of the overlying geomembrane and overburden.

Secondary Geomembrane Placement - Place the secondary geomembrane directly over the GeoDrain LD sheet. The smooth cuspated surface provides a stable low-damage interface for geomembrane deployment and welding. Do not rest welding equipment directly on the cuspated core - use bridging boards at weld locations if required.

UV Protection and Cover - Cover GeoDrain LD sheets within 28 days of installation. Place the next lining system layer as soon as practicable after secondary geomembrane acceptance. Do not stockpile heavy equipment or materials directly on the installed drainage layer before adequate cover is in place.
