Geomembrane Liners

EVA Geomembrane - Concrete Reservoir & Tank Lining

EVALINER , an Ethylene vinyl acetate geomembrane in 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm, the most flexible of the polyolefin liners. For lining concrete reservoirs, thickener tanks and irregularly shaped liquid-retaining structures where conformance around complex geometry governs. Covered and internal applications.

700% elongation at break - conforms to concrete geometry without cracking or lifting
Rated for cold temperature service - maintains flexibility at low operating temperatures where HDPE becomes brittle
Dual hot-wedge seams with NDT pressure-test channel - 100% non-destructive seam verification on every joint
Seam-free 3m wide rolls - minimises on-site jointing on large reservoir floor areas
For protected applications only - drinking water reservoirs, enclosed tanks and tunnel liners. Not for exposed outdoor containment

Overview

EVALINER is the most flexible of the polyolefin geomembranes. Where HDPE is stiff and panel-driven and LLDPE is a compromise, EVA is soft enough to be handled, folded and welded into geometry that would defeat either - internal corners, column bases, benching, pipe penetrations and the irregular profiles of existing concrete structures. It is also more resistant to tears and punctures than LLDPE, which matters in a structure being lined by hand in a confined space.

That flexibility is why EVALINER is the specified material for internal concrete reservoir lining, thickener tanks and other liquid-retaining structures where the liner has to follow the structure rather than the structure accommodating the liner. Rehabilitation of leaking concrete reservoirs is the most common application: the existing structure stays in service, and the liner delivers a verifiable barrier without demolition or recasting.

EVALINER has a relatively low softening point and is not UV stable over long periods. It should not be used uncovered in hot areas, and is not suitable for permanently exposed installations. For exposed dam and reservoir work, specify reinforced PVC or HDPE. This constraint is not a shortcoming so much as a definition of scope - EVALINER earns its place inside covered structures, which is exactly where its flexibility is worth paying for.

Available in 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm. Seams are thermally welded and tested for continuity before commissioning. Geosynthetics Africa supplies and installs across the continent with delivery to more than 30 countries, under IAGI-aligned QA/QC with weld testing and photographic sign-off.

Reservoir & Tank Lining

Internal concrete reservoir and tank lining with EVA Flexiliner - installed over GeoDrain Leak Detection cuspated sheet and GeoFoil conductive film for full spark testing and passive post-commissioning leak monitoring. For drinking water reservoirs, firewater tanks and enclosed industrial sumps

Water Containment

EVA Flexiliner for potable water reservoirs and enclosed water storage structures - where the liner is protected from UV exposure and extreme flexibility, cold-temperature performance and long-term water immersion resistance are the primary design requirements. Not for open ponds or exposed outdoor containment.

Mining Systems

Internal lining of thickener tanks, process sumps, reagent tanks and firewater storage in mining and metallurgical facilities - where chemical resistance, cold-temperature flexibility and full spark-test verification are required for confined concrete structures

EVA Flexiliner 1.5mm - EVA15

The standard concrete lining grade for drinking water reservoirs, enclosed water tanks and tunnel liners. 1,425 g/m² - 3m × 150m seam-free rolls. Suited to most internal concrete lining applications where a 1.5mm liner meets the project specification.

EVA Flexiliner 2.0mm - EVA20

The heavy-duty grade for thickener tanks, firewater tanks, industrial process tanks and applications requiring higher puncture and tear resistance. 1,900 g/m² - 3m × 150m seam-free rolls. Specified where structural loading, abrasion or chemical immersion demands greater liner thickness.

Installation Guidance

Standard Method Statement

The concrete substrate is prepared smooth and firm - all construction joints, tie-rod holes and surface defects filled and all protrusions removed. On all Geosynthetic Africa's EVA Flexiliner installations, the first layer applied to the concrete is the GeoDrain Leak Detection cuspated sheet - a high-compressive-strength (1,000 kN/m²) drainage board that creates a continuous void space between the concrete and the liner system. Any future moisture or seepage migrates through this drainage plane to a designated monitoring point rather than building pressure behind the liner or saturating the concrete structure undetected.

Over the GeoDrain layer, GeoFoil conductive film is laid continuously across the full floor and wall surface. This film enables electrical spark testing (holiday testing) of the completed EVA liner - passing an electrical current across the membrane surface to detect any pinhole, seam defect or discontinuity to within centimetres, without flooding the structure and before commissioning. The EVA Flexiliner panels are then deployed over the GeoFoil, overlapped and seamed by dual hot-wedge welding - producing two fully fused parallel seams with a central air channel for non-destructive pressure testing. Corners, pipe penetrations and weir connections are completed by extrusion welding with compatible EVA extrudate.

On completion, the full liner surface is spark-tested using GeoFoil -every square metre verified before the structure is filled. All seams are additionally verified by air-channel pressure test and destructive peel/shear samples are taken per the project QA plan. Post-commissioning, the GeoDrain drainage layer provides continuous passive leak detection - any future liner breach is channelled to the monitoring point, allowing early detection and targeted repair without draining or decommissioning the full structure. Geosynthetics Africa delivers a complete handover dossier: spark test records, seam log, NDT results, destructive test records and a signed installation certificate.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Field QA/QC Checklist

  • Subgrade Acceptance: Subgrade signed off before deployment: smooth, compacted, free of stones, roots and protrusions, and no standing water or desiccation cracks.
  • Material Conformance: Roll numbers and manufacturer QC certificates checked against GRI-GM13 (HDPE) or GRI-GM17 (LLDPE); conformance samples taken where the CQA plan requires.
  • Trial Welds: Trial seams made and peel/shear tested at the start of each shift, for each welder and machine, and whenever conditions change.
  • Non-Destructive Seam Testing: 100% of seams tested: air-pressure testing of double-wedge welds (ASTM D5820) and vacuum-box testing of extrusion welds, patches and repairs (ASTM D5641).
  • Destructive Seam Testing: Seam samples cut at intervals set by the CQA plan (GRI-GM14) and tested in shear and peel to ASTM D6392 against GRI-GM19 values.
  • Leak Location Survey: Electrical leak location survey (ASTM D7007 for covered liners, ASTM D7002/D7703 for exposed liners) where specified, before handover.
  • Panel Layout & Repairs Record: As-built panel layout, seam log and repair log kept and signed off, with every repair vacuum-tested.
