Waterproofing & Concrete Protection
GSE® Studliner® - HDPE Concrete Protection Liner (CPL)
Studded HDPE concrete protection liner for precast and cast-in-place structures. Supply across Africa, specialist installation and documented QA/QC.
Overview
GSE® Studliner® is a studded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) concrete protection liner for new construction and rehabilitation. Integral extruded studs anchor the liner into concrete or grout, while the smooth exposed face and welded joints form a continuous protective barrier against chemical attack and mechanical damage.
Geosynthetics Africa is an authorised supplier of GSE products in Africa. We provide material supply and delivery, specialist installation and documented QA/QC for concrete protection lining projects, coordinated through one accountable partner.
Applications include concrete sewer pipes, manholes, wastewater tanks, industrial process tanks, secondary containment, sumps and trenches. The liner can be incorporated into precast components, cast-in-place structures and engineered grouted relining systems.
GSE Studliner is available in 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 mm nominal thicknesses, in black or grey. Standard rolls have a nominal width of 2.4 m. Roll lengths are 75 m for 2.0 mm, 65 m for 3.0 mm and 60 m for 4.0 and 5.0 mm. Prefabricated panels and shapes accommodate project-specific dimensions and geometry.
Our installation scope covers panel layouts, formwork coordination, thermal welding, corners, pipe penetrations, terminations and repairs. Existing structures require a suitable substrate and an engineered relining arrangement. Thickness, anchorage and chemical compatibility are matched to the design and operating conditions.
Our QA/QC programme covers material traceability, trial welds, seam identification, non-destructive testing, construction-damage inspections, repairs and retesting. Accessible welds are vacuum tested to ASTM D5641, with spark testing to ASTM D6365 where the joint detail supports the method. Final sheet integrity testing and handover records are included in the agreed inspection and test plan.
Technical notes: Tensile properties are measured in each direction using a Type IV dumbbell specimen and a 50.8 mm gauge length. *Modified test procedure. ¹ The stud pull-out value requires concrete compressive strength of at least 35 MPa. ² Carbon black dispersion applies to near-spherical agglomerates: nine of ten views must be Category 1 or 2, with no more than one view in Category 3. All physical property values apply to the four listed thickness grades.

Installation Guidance
Standard Method Statement
GSE® Studliner® is supplied in rolls with a nominal width of 2.4 m or as prefabricated pieces, and should be stored on a clean, smooth surface, covered and out of direct sunlight. Panels are fixed to the formwork smooth side against the form, with the studs facing the concrete. Fix them with nails, screws, tie wire or banding, allowing for thermal movement, and never attach rebar to the liner.
Seams are overlapped by about 100 mm and temporarily sealed so concrete can't get between the sheets. Plan concrete pouring in the early morning, at dusk or at night, when the liner is thermally contracted, and vibrating the concrete to fully embed the studs. Floors can be lined by grouting the liner onto an existing slab.
Prepare clean, dry surfaces and complete trial seams using project material before field welding. Weld panel joints, penetrations and repairs using the approved method. Vacuum test accessible welds in accordance with ASTM D5641 and the project procedure; spark testing to ASTM D6365 can be used where the joint detail supports it. Include final spark testing of the complete sheet surface in the inspection and test plan. Record defects, repairs and retests. Destructive testing is not advised after the liner is embedded in concrete.
Quality Assurance & Testing
Field QA/QC Checklist
- Delivery & Storage: Materials checked against the delivery note and conformance certificates, stored off the ground, covered from UV and kept clear of sharp objects and fuel.
- Formwork Fixing: Sheets fixed to formwork with anchor studs facing the concrete, joints aligned and no studs bent or damaged before the pour.
- Concrete Placement: Concrete placed and vibrated so studs are fully embedded without displacing or tearing the liner.
- Joint Welding: Joints between sheets and at construction joints closed with extrusion-welded strips after stripping the formwork.
- Weld Testing: 100% of welds tested by vacuum box (ASTM D5641) or spark testing, with repairs re-tested.
Manufacturing Standards
