Technical Specification of HDPE Geomembrane Liners

HDPE geomembranes are used as containment barriers in mining, waste management and water infrastructure. GRI-GM13 specifies minimum manufacturing properties and test frequencies for smooth and textured HDPE geomembranes; project suitability must also be assessed against the design and operating conditions.

Select liner thickness and grade for the intended liquid, operating temperature, exposure conditions and protection system. Service life depends on the formulation and site conditions; a single service-life figure should not be treated as a guarantee for every HDPE liner or application. Chemical compatibility and any potable-water approvals must be confirmed for the specific product.

Geosynthetics Africa supplies smooth and textured HDPE liners, with conductive, reflective and high-temperature options subject to the selected manufacturer’s range and availability. GSE® HD is a Solmax HDPE geomembrane series; use the current grade-specific manufacturer datasheet and quality documentation to confirm compliance. Where installation is included, seam testing and handover records follow the approved project QA/QC plan, using methods appropriate to the seam type.

Three Questions To Ask Before You Order

1.What HDPE thickness should I specify for a tailings storage facility (TSF)?
The project designer must specify thickness and grade for the TSF design, operating conditions, protection layers and applicable regulatory requirements. There is no single thickness or slope rule that is suitable for every TSF. Send the project specification, design details and BOQ so our technical team can confirm suitable supply options and identify any clarification required from the designer.
2.What is the difference between smooth and double-textured HDPE - and when must I specify textured?
Smooth and textured liners provide different interface shear behaviour. The designer selects the surface profile using the actual adjacent materials, loading and slope-stability requirements. Texturing one or both faces depends on the interfaces in the system. Relevant interface testing, such as ASTM D5321, provides design values for the tested conditions; slope angle alone does not establish a universal requirement for textured liner.
3.Is HDPE geomembrane compatible with heap leach solutions and cyanide?
HDPE geomembranes are used in mining containment, but compatibility must be confirmed for the selected formulation, reagent concentrations, temperature and exposure duration. GM13 manufacturing compliance alone does not demonstrate suitability for every chemical environment. Provide the process chemistry and operating conditions so the manufacturer and project designer can assess the grade and any additional compatibility testing required.
4.Do you supply only, or do you also install? Can you manage the full scope?
Both. Geosynthetics Africa is one of only 5 IAGI Installer Members in Africa - we supply and install on one contract, eliminating the procurement and accountability gap between material supply and field execution. For clients with their own certified installation crews, we supply materials with full technical documentation, QC certificates and roll-by-roll traceability. Upload your BOQ and we will structure a quotation around your project's specific requirements.
5.How are HDPE seams tested - and what documentation do we receive?
The approved project QA/QC plan defines seam coverage, test frequency and acceptance criteria. Dual-track seams are evaluated using pressurised air-channel testing to ASTM D5820; suitable seams and details can be evaluated by vacuum chamber to ASTM D5641. Destructive peel and shear testing to ASTM D6392 is performed at the specified sampling frequency. The agreed handover scope includes the relevant material, weld, test, repair and as-built records.
6.Can you deliver HDPE geomembrane to my project site outside South Africa?
Yes. Geosynthetics Africa has delivered HDPE geomembrane to 30+ African countries including Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali, Namibia, Angola and more. We handle full customs clearing, bonded freight where required, and in-country delivery to site. We maintain stock in South Africa for rapid dispatch. Upload your BOQ with delivery location and we will provide a full landed-cost quotation including logistics.
7.What is a conductive HDPE geomembrane and does my project need it?
A conductive geomembrane incorporates a conductive layer to support electrical leak-location testing. Solmax’s GSE® Leak Location Conductive liner is co-extruded with a conductive bottom layer. The survey method and site preparation must suit the liner and installation conditions. It supports a planned leak-location survey; it should not be presented as automatic continuous monitoring. The project designer and survey specialist should determine whether this system suits your project.
8.How do I get a quote for HDPE geomembrane supply or installation?
The fastest route is to upload your Bill of Quantities (BOQ) using the form on this page - our team will review and respond with a technical quotation, not just a price. If you don't have a BOQ yet, contact us directly and our technical team will work through liner type, thickness, quantity and installation scope with you. We provide specification support at no charge.

Specification For The Design, Installation Of HDPE Geomembrane Liners

Installation follows the approved project method statement, panel layout and QA/QC plan. The receiving surface is inspected before deployment. Panel overlaps, anchorage, temporary restraint and welding conditions are set for the selected liner and equipment, following manufacturer guidance and the project specification.

Dual-track fusion welding and extrusion welding are used as appropriate to the seam and detail. Non-destructive testing uses the applicable method: pressurised air-channel evaluation to ASTM D5820 for dual seams, and vacuum-chamber evaluation to ASTM D5641 where suitable. Destructive peel and shear testing to ASTM D6392 is performed at the frequency and acceptance criteria defined in the approved project QA/QC plan.

Repairs are recorded and retested using the applicable method before acceptance and covering. Handover documentation is defined in the agreed scope and may include material roll records, panel layouts, weld logs, non-destructive and destructive test records, repair logs, as-built drawings and the handover certificate.
